TRAPO HEX Car Mats Review

BMW Trapo

When I took delivery of my leased BMW X1, I already had a rough idea of the little changes I wanted to make to personalise it.

The wheels and tyres were one. Original Equipment BMW bike racks were another. Then the floor mats were next.

Floor mats are among the items most people rarely think about. They’re there, they get dirty, and as long as they stay in place, most owners never give them a second thought. Spend enough time with a car, though, and you start to appreciate the little details that shape the ownership experience.

All my previous cars got new floor mats. I even ordered OE carpets for my previous 17-year-old Honda Odyssey. Because I reckon they’re the dirtiest items in a car, especially a used car, I mean, you don’t want to live with other people’s dirt and germs, right?

That’s where TRAPO comes in.

What Is TRAPO HEX?

TRAPO’s HEX range sits as one of the brand’s flagship car mat offerings. Designed specifically for individual vehicle models, each set is custom-fitted rather than cut from a generic template.

The HEX mats feature a distinctive hexagonal surface pattern that helps trap dirt and debris more effectively, while remaining easy to clean with a simple rinse. The mats are made from recyclable materials and incorporate Japanese Silver Ion technology, which helps eliminate bacteria and maintain a more hygienic cabin environment. TRAPO’s proprietary anti-slip system also keeps the mats securely in place without damaging the vehicle’s original flooring. The HEX range comes with a five-year warranty and is available in a variety of colour combinations, allowing owners to match the mats to their vehicle’s interior or exterior theme.

Built To Match

For the BMW X1, I opted for the HEX front and rear set in black, finished with a blue outline to match the Portimao Blue exterior.

Since TRAPO already had the X1’s measurements and template on file, the process was straightforward. I placed the order, specified my preferred colour combination, and waited a few days for the mats to be prepared.

Once they were ready, I headed down for installation.

The process took all of 15 minutes.

The staff first vacuumed the interior before fitting the new mats over the existing floor area. It was quick, fuss-free and exactly the sort of experience busy owners appreciate.

First Impressions

The first thing that stood out was the fit.

The mats sit snugly against the floor’s contours and look very much like OEM accessories rather than aftermarket add-ons. There are no awkward gaps or areas where the mat appears oversized or undersized.

Visually, the blue outline worked exactly as I had imagined. It adds a subtle touch of colour without looking overly flashy and ties in nicely with the X1’s exterior paintwork.

The material itself is softer than I expected. Underfoot, it feels pleasant and has a premium quality to it. Long drives probably won’t feel any different, but every time you get into the car, it does make the cabin feel that little bit more finished.

One Small Observation

There was only one area I wasn’t entirely convinced about.

TRAPO extends coverage over the left footrest area beside the pedals. Personally, I didn’t feel that section necessarily needed to be covered. BMW already finishes that part in a durable plastic trim and I think it looks perfectly fine left exposed.

That said, I can also see the argument for protecting it from scratches and wear over time. It certainly doesn’t look bad. It’s simply one of those personal preferences where I might have chosen a slightly different approach.

Final Thoughts

Floor mats won’t transform the way your car drives. Neither will they make it faster around corners nor improve acceleration figures.

But they can improve the ownership experience every single day.

After a few days, I’ve found that the TRAPO HEX mats
• fit (very) well
• look (really) good
• feel premium underfoot
• are easy to clean and dust off

And they add a nice personalised touch to the cabin. For BMW X1 owners, or really anyone looking for a cleaner and more tailored alternative to standard mats, they’re an easy recommendation.

As for me, every time I open the door and see that blue outline against the black interior, it feels exactly like the look I had in mind.

TRAPO 10th Anniversary Promotion

And no, TRAPO isn’t a new company. In fact, they’ve been serving happy customers for the past decade and are celebrating their 10th Anniversary from 10 to 20 June. Customers who make qualifying purchases during the campaign period will earn chances to win a range of prizes, making it a good time to upgrade your car’s interior.
