Meet The Contenders
Clockwise, from top left, going to battle for the Germans in the arena of Cat A sedans is the Audi A3 1.0 TFSi. Representing the Czech Republic is the Škoda Octavia 1.0 eTec. Flying the French flag is the Peugeot 408.
What if someone wants brand cachet in their motoring life but doesn’t want to break the bank while at it? The Audi A3 1.0 TFSi is a compelling proposition in the Cat A sedans category. It looks suitably upmarket and distinguished, has a premium interior and sips fuel during the everyday commute. This is how one looks smart while buying smart.
For a more low-key appearance but still with a suitably upmarket and spacious interior, the Škoda Octavia 1.0 eTec has a lot going for it. It sips fuel like the Audi, rides comfortably and has sufficient tech to keep one’s smartphone happily connected. What’s not to like?
The Peugeot 408 caused a lot of controversy among the four of us on the judging panel, but only because we couldn’t decide which category it belonged to.
Liftback? Lifted crossover? Crossover liftback? Pumped-up sedan? There was much to argue about, but one thing we couldn’t argue against is its looks, stylish interior space and practicality. There’s the usual French quirkiness in here, but DANG does it look a million bucks!
One upmarket, one sensible and one wildcard. This is exciting.
