Defender OCTA Black Makes Singapore Debut At 67 On Scotts

For one weekend, Defender traded muddy trails for Scotts Road, transforming 67 on Scotts into an immersive showcase of heritage, culture and hospitality, with the formidable OCTA Black sitting at the centre of it all.

Mention Defender and certain images immediately come to mind. Mud. Mountains. Expeditions to places where paved roads are regarded as an unnecessary luxury. Perhaps a river crossing or two, preferably with water somewhere around the bonnet.

A two-storey lifestyle experience on Scotts Road is probably not the first.

Yet that was precisely the point of Defender @ 67 on Scotts, which transformed the venue for one weekend into an immersive celebration of the British 4×4 marque. Owners and enthusiasts were taken through Defender’s history, craftsmanship and culture, before arriving at the centrepiece: the Singapore debut of the new Defender OCTA Black.

Defender’s history is built on going places, so the experience began, appropriately enough, with the past.

Guests were taken through a visual journey documenting the marque’s landmark expeditions and humanitarian work, before the environment gradually transitioned into a pared-back, monochromatic space for the unveiling of the OCTA Black.

The Defender can trace its roots back to the first Land Rover of 1948, and its history is intertwined with exploration, humanitarian work and the sort of terrain that tends not to feature kerbs or traffic lights.

Today, however, the modern Defender has also become a luxury object, something equally at home outside a five-star hotel as it is halfway up a mountain. Defender @ 67 on Scotts was designed to explore both sides of that personality.

The Defender OCTA Black is the latest interpretation of the high-performance Defender OCTA, combining its extreme on- and off-road capabilities with an extensive all-black treatment and a greater emphasis on luxury.

The second level shifted the focus away from horsepower and off-road capability towards culture and community.

A curated library brought together literature and objects inspired by travel, exploration and Defender’s history. The accompanying imagery shows a deliberately restrained space filled with books, photography and objects associated with adventure rather than the usual collection of specification boards and configurators.

There was also a Vinyl Listening Lounge, featuring international and Singaporean musicians selected for what Defender described as their groundbreaking and trailblazing spirit.

For invited guests, the evening culminated in a chef’s table dinner created by Ivan Brehm, chef-owner of Michelin-starred Nouri and multidisciplinary space Appetite.

Bespoke cocktails created by 67 on Scotts accompanied the meal, with the entire dining experience designed around Defender’s interpretation of what it calls “tough luxury”.

Defender @ 67 on Scotts represents a different approach to how the marque intends to engage with customers in Singapore.

Rather than simply placing a new model beneath showroom lights and unveiling it beneath a sheet, the event surrounded the OCTA Black with the broader themes Defender wants associated with the brand: exploration, craftsmanship, music, food and community.

“Defender is defined not only by its capability, but by the people and experiences that surround it. Defender @ 67 on Scotts brings our community together in a way that reflects the spirit of the brand: bold, adventurous and unmistakably Defender.”

Garth Turnbull, Managing Director, Asia Pacific.

That perhaps explains why the OCTA Black, despite being the obvious star of the weekend, was not necessarily the entire story, but rather the clearest indication of how far Defender has travelled.

Its vehicles may still be engineered to venture beyond the road, but the brand itself increasingly wants to venture beyond the car.
