Read on and find out where else could use a good cleanse!

With the Lunar New Year imminent, so too are holiday preparations for some households in Singapore. With the slightly relaxed meet-up regulations introduced in Phase 3, many of us are probably looking forward to hosting our extended family and friends for the festive celebrations. But, thanks to work-from-home arrangements, our homes have probably been rearranged, and could use a good spring cleaning before we entertain visitors.

Spring cleaning before the New Year stems from the belief of sweeping away bad luck from the previous year, and in modern times, this is often combined with the famed ‘KonMari’ methods of tidying up and only keeping things that “spark joy”. If you’re at a loss and don’t know where to start, we’re here to help! Here are some of the places you didn’t know needed spring cleaning.

The Obvious: Your home

While it may seem like we are stating the obvious, doing a major spring clean is never as easy as it sounds. If you’ve been conscientiously maintaining your home like the domestic god/goddess you are, skip on ahead to the next point. For the rest of us who struggle more often than not, here are some tips that might help.

Check your cupboards and drawers

While getting rid of the dust and dirt is one aspect of spring cleaning, decluttering is a fairly major component as well. Cupboards and drawers often hide things away from prying eyes, and I am often more than guilty of chucking items into them when I have guests. Over time, these can become forgotten, and while you might dread to discover what you could possibly unearth, perhaps you might also find some knick-knacks you thought had gone missing since two Christmases ago.

Compartmentalise your space

Are you the sort to keep the spare nuts and bolts that came with your IKEA bookcase, only to never actually use them? If you’re the type who prefers to have everything “just in case”, you’ll be glad to have your items stored in compartments by the time you need them. To make things even easier, label your compartments so you won’t have to hunt high and low for that box of something-something you left somewhere.

Donate or give things away

During your spring clean, you might uncover clothes, appliances, and items that you no longer use. If these are still in great condition, consider donating or giving them away instead of tossing them in the trash. Not only does this help reduce waste, but you might also be able to help someone else in the meantime. After all, as the Chinese saying goes, doing good deeds can bring the greatest joys.

The Ignored: Your car

If you’ve got plans at the back of your head to get your car detailed for the new year, that’s great! (Psst, we may or may not have some great deals for you. Just ask our friendly service team!) But don’t forget, getting your car looking shiny and new again is not the end of it. If there are plans to shuttle your family to Grandma’s for a reunion dinner, cleaning out your interior is equally important.

Check your compartments

And I don’t just mean your glove compartment or boot. Check your cupholders, the holders on the side of your doors, and the pockets behind the seats. Depending on who your frequent passengers are, you might find a special surprise somewhere. It’s also a good opportunity to check the expiry date on your parking coupons, refill the emergency candy jar, and if you find some stubborn stains that look like too much of a hassle, give AutoApp a call!

The Forgotten: Your tech

There’s no arguing that technological advancements happen at a rate faster than we can keep up with. Personally, I’ve cycled through five iPhone models in the last 10 years, and while the allure of new and cool tech is partly to blame, many of my devices were still in working condition when I switched to the upgraded model. The same can be said about our other devices too, as older tech slowly but surely become obsolete and unusable. For devices you no longer need, here’s a list of places you can drop them off to either recycle, donate, or sell your old tech.

Do a camera roll purge

If you’ve got thousands of photos and videos in your smartphone’s camera roll, you, my friend, might be a digital hoarder. We feel you. Technology has made it so easy for us to capture all these important moments that documenting our lives in pictures is practically second nature. Whether it’s our children, furbabies, the places we’ve travelled to, and the things we love, it’s easy for a photo collection to grow out of control till your device is constantly reminding you to make space and delete something.

But, amidst all these lovely memories surely are some less pleasing ones — blurry pictures when your hand shook, memes you saved but don’t find funny anymore, or five versions of the same picture edited differently. These should be the first to go during your purge, and before long your camera roll will find itself with some breathing room again.

CDs, VCDs, DVDs? What’re those?

If you have no idea the answer to this question, good for you. With so many music and video streaming services available, physical discs are meeting their slow but sure demise as mainstream sellables, though there is still a small, niche market for special collectors’ editions. Nonetheless, if you’ve still got copies of your favourite K-drama or blockbuster movie on VCD from Kim Poh, these can move higher up your to-go list, as alternatives are easily available on the likes of Viu and Netflix.

What about those old CD mixtapes you used to listen to? Got you covered, says Spotify and Apple Music.

The Essential: Your wellbeing

The most unexpected and also the most challenging spring-clean is your own wellbeing. Our shoulders often carry the weight of our worlds, and these loads can become too much to bear after a long time. There will always be problems and stresses that we have difficulty coping with, and I’m not suggesting that shirking all responsibility and going YOLO is the best solution. But, if there are ways to ease our minds even a little, why not lighten the load? Your mind and heart will feel relieved, even if it doesn’t spark complete joy.

Let go of old grudges

If you’ve been hurt in the past, it’s easy to nurse that hurt into a grudge. It won’t be easy, but being able to let go and move on from past hurt also means redirecting that emotional energy into moving forward. Instead of thinking of it as forgiving and forgetting (both of which are not easy), consciously deciding that the grudge is no longer worth your mental and emotional dollars can set you on an easier path forward.

Put a stop to toxic relationships

You’ll recognise a toxic relationship if being around that person or place has you feeling constantly drained, at a loss, or stressed. You might also experience a lack of support, or be on the receiving end of verbal abuse. These are only some of the signs, and toxic relationships can manifest in many ways, both at home or in a workplace. Depending on the circumstances, these can be dealt with by either walking away, or working towards fixing the relationship. Neither are easy roads to take, but with the right support, are definitely roads worth taking.

POWER PUPS: Keep your dog safe with these pet accessories https://www.autoapp.sg/dev/?p=4129 Sat, 19 Sep 2020 03:30:00 +0000 https://autoapp.sg/?p=4129 Make every drive safe and comfy for your pets with these must-have pet accessories, even if it’s to the vet.

We’ve explored ways to child-proof your car and how to keep our mini-mes safe on a drive. But what of our precious canine friends on whom we bestow much of our love and attention?

Pets such as dogs are often like young children. For one, they spark joy in our (sad and lonely) lives. They also sometimes leave drool stains in unexpected places, or go to the toilet on our car mats and seats. Most of all, they can also be rather excitable if they are young and untrained. Properly strapping them in (like good children) will ensure a safe and comfortable ride for everyone.

There are various ways you can keep your pooch safe and comfy. Here are some pet accessories that do just the trick!

Dog seat belts

Most dog owners love it when their beloved forever-puppy pounces on them in a display of affection. Except while driving. Dog seat belts come with a clasp that can be attached to the pet collar, and a seat belt clip that will fit into the seat belt buckle. Simply slot the clip in, and your pup is ready for a ride. Other dog seat belts can be attached to the headrest instead.

Pet booster seats

For smaller dogs, booster seats are available, especially if they love watching traffic go by. These car seats also usually come with a strap that you can attach to your dog’s harness. These can also be directly secured with a seat belt, similar to how child car seats work.

Pet hammocks

Big dogs certainly won’t fit into a booster seat, but don’t worry. You can transform your entire back seat with a pet hammock. The hammock can be secured to the headrests of the front and back seats, and folded when not required. They are usually made of a waterproof or water-resistant material. This creates a protective canopy that keeps your pooch comfortable and ensures that any wet and messy mishaps are confined to the hammock.

Calming treats

Source: RedMart

For your more anxious fur-babies, having some calming treats on hand is must. An uneasy dog may react or behave in unexpected ways, and calming treats often contain ingredients such as melatonin to help them relax. Be sure to offer these treats in moderation to avoid overdosing your pet with too much calming aids.

Pet stairs/ramps

Source: Lazada

If you drive a hatchback and your dog’s designated seat is behind everyone else, investing in a ramp or pet stairs provides an easy way for your furry pal to get in or out of the car. Especially for vertically challenged breeds like corgis and dachshunds, jumping from a height can cause injuries to their legs and joints.

Bonus: Crate your cat

While many of the pet accessories here will work equally well with cats, the best way to keep your kitty comfortable is to have crate or carrier. Cats are easily spooked and startled and can become anxious during car rides. Having a comfortable crate or carrier that they can spend time in will help ease their nerves. Bring some of their favourite toys along too — they will appreciate the familiarity.

Depending on your cat’s temperament, it may be inclined to move around more and pace around. While this may not be an issue for short drives, bring a carrier with you nonetheless just in case.

Now that you know what to buy, check out these shopping tips to make smart purchases without breaking the bank!

MY FIRST CAR: Why used rides are great for new drivers https://www.autoapp.sg/dev/?p=4119 Tue, 15 Sep 2020 08:11:04 +0000 https://autoapp.sg/?p=4119 As a first-time car buyer, the purchase process can be a daunting prospect mainly because there’s so much information to know. Do you get something stylish, or practical? Should you buy new, or used? It’s easy to let your heart rule the buying process, but hear us out before you make that decision!

So you’re fresh out of school and have found your dream first job. Congratulations! Unfortunately, you live in Tampines but your new office is located all the way up North, in the Woodlands industrial area. Your friends hear of this and laugh, “Wah, everyday go office need to bring passport!” before suggesting to buy a car.

As a fresh graduate with limited resources, buying a car is a heavy financial commitment. Under MAS (Monetary Authority of Singapore) regulations, car buyers are limited to a maximum loan quantum of 70% of the car’s purchase price for cars with an OMV less than or equal to $20,000.

Open Market Value (OMV)Maximum Loan Quantum
Less than or equal to S$20,00070%
More than S$20,00060%

These regulations mean forking out a sizeable sum of cold hard cash to purchase a car. Take for example, one of Singapore’s most affordable sedans you can buy new, the Mitsubishi Attrage. At a purchase price of $69,999 (as of September 2020), buyers will need to pay $21,000 upfront – and this is before we even get to loan repayment!

If these figures sound way too daunting, buying a used car can be a more viable route to explore. Despite not having the ‘new car smell’ and lacking some high-tech features, used cars can still pose a compelling value proposition. Here’s why!

There’s no need to survive on instant noodles just to afford a car.

Low barrier to entry

Unlike new cars which come with a full 10-year lifespan, you can opt for a used car with balance COE of 5 years or less to keep costs low. Additionally, buying used means you skip the typically steep depreciation curve for new cars.

Multiple studies have shown that new cars lose 50% or more of its original value in the first 4 years. This is before taking into consideration other factors such as fluctuating COE prices, which may increase the percentage.

To further minimise the annual depreciation figure, you might like to consider a car that’s already had its COE renewed. The majority of COE renewed cars’ value is in their ‘paper value’, which means that depreciation is pegged to the value of the COE you’re utilising.

Older cars just need hand tools to be fixed, not a computer!

They’re easier to put right.

Older cars, although lacking some creature comforts, tend to be mechanically simpler than their newer counterparts. With less sensors and computers on-board, expensive electronic issues are less prevalent.

Fingers crossed that it won’t happen, but older cars’ relative simplicity also mean that minor accidents are cheaper to fix. Headlights and taillights aren’t sealed LED units that cost a 4-figure sum to replace, and body parts are widely available used or through a third-party manufacturer.

Older cars save you money at the point of purchase, and on insurance!

They’re cheaper to insure.

The shock that many young drivers get is finding out how much car insurance costs. In the car insurance equation, finding an insurer that’s reasonably priced is just one part of it. Finding a car that’s cheap to insure, is the other – and it’s not as easy as it seems.

Car insurance premiums are calculated based on a host of factors, but in general, older cars are cheaper to insure. Based on trends, it’s been found that insurance premiums of older cars which are around five to eight years old can be up to 25 percent lower than that of a newer model!

Whether you’re a first-time car owner that needs assistance, or a long-time car owner that just can’t find the time to get your car issues sorted, AutoApp is here to help!

TURBO TOTS: Car cleaning hacks for parents https://www.autoapp.sg/dev/?p=4023 Fri, 11 Sep 2020 13:03:04 +0000 https://autoapp.sg/?p=4023 From crayon marks, to that recurring wee-wee smell that just won’t go away. You may not have a crystal ball powerful enough to predict what your little one will get up to next. But you do have this list of car cleaning hacks that’ll help you parent like a pro. Meh, close enough.

“It wasn’t me.”

When they told you about parenthood they probably mentioned the diaper duties, frantic school runs and deep questions about life from a pint-sized interrogator who kinda looks like you. But did anyone really prepare you for the true horror of trying to remove potato chip crumbs from your car seat seams? Are you still, unable to identify the origins of that mysterious stain on your carpet from months ago?

Yup, thought so.

Not to worry though, we’ve got you. Read on to discover some car cleaning hacks and tips that’ll help you ace this parenting gig and keep your beloved ride in tip-top condition!

“Mummy, what’s a per-ma-nent marker?”

Clean up window art.

Is that a bird? A plane? No, it’s just your little one’s impression of their favourite Peppa Pig character. Drawn on the passenger side window. With her tongue.

Whether its fingerprints, smudges or *inhales* saliva art, having a bottle of glass cleaner in your car really goes a long way. Just remember to use a microfiber cloth to prevent scratches, and to avoid paper towels which could leave unsightly streaks or lint trails. If you ever happen to be without these, baby wipes actually work wonders too! Their anti-static residue helps stop new dust from gathering on your windows.

If for some reason your little one’s gone to town with pasting stickers on your pristine windows, try picking them off before spraying on WD-40 on what’s left. Then, wipe it off after a few minutes with a damp cloth. Or you could just give in a little and hand them some washable window markers instead. Take that, Banksy Jr!

Say bye-bye to pee-pee.

You have never felt real fear until you’ve heard, “Daddy, I need to go wee-wee” while you’re cruising down the expressway with no sign of the next exit. If you, like many other parents have experienced wee on the car seats, you may have noticed that a stale smell still lingers too, regardless of how much you’ve tried to clean your fabric seats.

Instead of trying to drown it out with air freshener (or tears), try this: Stir about 2 cups of cold water with 1 tablespoon of white vinegar, and add on another tablespoon of liquid dish soap. Then, lightly dip (not soak) a sponge into the mixture and blot the pee-stained area from the outside in. Finally, use a dry cloth to blot until dry. Easy pee-sy!

Mind the gap.

Rid your seat seams of crumbs.

Just like eager aunties at the supermarket, you too fell for his wily charms. All it took was a “Mummy, I’m hungry!” and you let him eat Mamee noodles in the back seat of your car. So it may not have been the best of ideas but what’s a girl gonna do when faced with that cherubic smile? If vacuuming alone doesn’t help get rid of crumbs on the seat seams, try using a small detail brush or toothbrush. You’ll be amazed at how easily it scoops up small bits of dirt you never noticed before!

Dude, what’s that smell?

Puke, pee, poop, forgotten bottles of milk, leftover snack packs… the list of undiscovered treasure in your car can sometimes seem endless. Worst of all, the smell lingers on and on like a bad love song. But before you start ordering batches of expensive air freshener or fragrance sticks, try this. Simply leave an opened bag of charcoal briquettes/bricks in your car overnight. Abracadabra, stank be gone!

The only thing bad about fried chicken is nothing.

Grease fighting.

Maybe you didn’t clean your tyke’s hands as well as you thought and now grease from those chicken nuggets are all over the place. A Happy Meal really shouldn’t be making you so unhappy. Got any car cleaning hacks for grease, you ask?

Why yes! Simply apply a scoop of cornstarch to the greased-up area and gently rub it into the stain with a clean cloth. After letting it sit for a few hours, use a vacuum to remove the remaining cornstarch.

How about Crayo-NO-la.

You can drive peacefully if your children are distracted, they said. Let them do some colouring, they said. Well they certainly didn’t mention how difficult it was to get crayon stains off the seats and carpets. It’s okay, try this nifty trick to free your car’s carpets or upholstery from your little Picasso’s doodles.

First, gently scrape off crayon bits with a spoon, then spray a small amount of WD-40 and dab with a sponge. Finally, apply some liquid dishwashing detergent to remove the remaining bits of crayon. Sweet! But, in future, perhaps consider these toys to distract them instead…?

“But I don’t want to go to school!” *kick kick kick*

Backseat driving.

No one really knows why kids love kicking the seats in front of them. But what we do know is that those dirt and grass stains on the back of your driver’s seat aren’t good for your car’s interior.

To get rid of these, simply apply some interior cleaner then wipe it off with a microfiber cloth. For tougher stains, use a more concentrated cleaner with a horsehair brush instead.

If you have leather seats, apply on some leather conditioner after cleaning it to prevent dry-out. Also, because prevention is better than cure, you could invest in a back seat cover or simply throw on a large t-shirt over your seat to prevent footprints.

Diaper duty.

If you ever run out of wet wipes or tissue (*gasp*) on the road, reach out for your nearest diaper. Yup, you heard that right. Whether it’s spills from sippy cups or your own coffee tumbler, rest assured that the diapers are ultra-absorbent and can quickly soak up spills. Also, yes they’re expensive but desperate times call for desperate measures!

Just a note that these car cleaning hacks may not work for all situations. If in doubt, always err on the side of caution and seek help from professionals instead. While you’re at it, be sure to check out our sanitisation service too!

SMART SHOPPING: 8 money-saving tips for the new age shopper https://www.autoapp.sg/dev/?p=2764 Thu, 09 Jul 2020 01:20:19 +0000 https://autoapp.sg/?p=2764 There are some people who only shop out of necessity. And then there are others who derive immense joy from buying the most random things. Whether you’re a bargain hunter, impulse buyer or practical shopper, there’s no denying that shopping in this day and age has been made sooo much more convenient thanks to the internet. That is why it’s all the more important to adopt good shopping habits to stop you from spending more than you should. Read on for money-saving tips and find out how you can shop smart both online and off!

It’s not thaaat hard to memorise those 16 magic digits.

Keep your personal details to yourself.

If you have the memory span of a goldfish, or if numbers just make you nervous, chances are you’ve probably saved your login or credit card details on several websites.

Well, it has probably made online shopping way more convenient hasn’t it? Groceries? Click and done! Phone bills? Click and paid! $120 designer dustbin with an obscure Swedish sounding name? Click and ordered! Wait, what just happened?

You see, just like the anti-drug campaigns of old and Pringles commercials have taught us: Once you start, you can’t stop. The easier it is to check out your ever-growing cart online, the more likely you’ll find yourself spending money on things you may not necessarily need. What’s more, having your login details saved makes you an easy target for hackers and the like too.

Know that the price isn’t always right.

So you’re looking for a new phone. What’s your game plan? Do you go straight to the official manufacturer’s shop or your favourite neighbourhood tech shop? Or maybe you’d rather skip the queues and just get it online instead?

You don’t have to dig too far into the money-saving tips jar before you come across this nugget of wisdom: Always look out for the best prices on more than one platform, whether online or off. And if anyone mockingly calls you an ‘aunty’, well they won’t be laughing once they find out how much you’ve saved! In some cases, searching several places could save you a hefty amount of cash. After all, no one likes paying more for something they can get for less.

If you’re a car owner looking out for car parts or accessories, the same rules apply. As a pro tip, check out websites like sgCarMart or platforms like Carousell which may offer bargains or money-saving tips on purchasing car accessories and more. Facebook groups specific to your car make or model may even feature certain parts and accessories that you won’t be able to find elsewhere.

Get those receipts out of the bin and into your drawer.

Keep your purchases close and your receipts closer.

If you’ve ever purchased gadgets or other electronic equipment, you probably already know the importance of receipts. Afterall, they’re a life saver when the item you purchased turns out to be defective and needs to be repaired or replaced. But did you know that keeping your receipts for services such as hairdressing appointments, or even consultations with your doctor is just as important too?

For instance, when it comes to servicing your car, a one-month warranty on workmanship is more or less standard. This makes sense since you’ll probably only notice issues a day or two after the initial work. As such, it’s definitely a good idea to remember to keep your receipts in a safe place. If a bulk of your receipts are on paper (and not digital), snap quick pics on your phone just in case the ink fades over time.

Don’t fall for the ad trap.

Unless you spend most of your time in hibernation, it’s almost impossible to go a day without seeing at least one advertisement. In fact, studies have found that the average person sees thousands of ads a day! And with social media platforms allowing companies to target consumers down to specific demographics (did someone say single, 28-year-old male with 2 golden retrievers and an interest in romcoms and juggling?), you’ll most likely be seeing ads that appeal most to you. That’s also why that image of a pair of sweet sneakers you viewed once has been following you around for days.

Since you can’t avoid ads, one way to deal with them is to make lists of things you do need to get, and to stop yourself from making purchases out of boredom. Of course, that’s easier said than done! *quickly closes Zalora, Lazada and Qoo10 tabs on browser and starts reading up on more money-saving tips*

Does the word ‘sale’ get you all tingly?

Don’t be fooled by marketing gimmicks.

Yes, we’re sure you know it all too well. That ‘clearance sale’ banner that you’ve seen at the same shop for months now, or even overly-excited youths at supermarkets offering you ‘buy 1 get 1 free’ promotions. Sales and marketing gimmicks have been around for years to help make products look more appealing to consumers.

For instance, one of the most used marketing gimmicks at car workshops is the classic bait and switch. They’ll start by offering customers low prices to service their car or perform repairs. Once customers bring their car in, the staff might then point out several things that could do with replacing too – these include brake pads, transmission fluid and more.

Well, boo to that.

As a rule of thumb, try to avoid car servicing packages which are well below the usual market rate. For instance, be wary of anything that costs less than $180 unless you know exactly what it entails. If you’re still clueless on whether something is a marketing gimmick or not, just remember this: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

But if you’d rather just avoid the hassle of finding a good workshop or trying to pick up money-saving tips you can use at your next car servicing then why not try out AutoApp? By only working with reputable and trusted partner workshops, you can rest assured that you’ll never fall prey to gimmicks or scams with us! And that’s the truth.

Know the ABCs of T&Cs.

There’s a whole bunch of reasons why you should always pay attention to the fine print. Sure, most of us tend to just gloss over walls of text, especially when the font size is smaller than 10. However, the extra effort you make to read the terms and conditions of that car servicing contract or online website could pay off in the long run. The last thing you want is to be slapped with extra fees or charges that you weren’t aware of.

And… you don’t want to be signing off your first-born child to an unknown company do you?

99 bottles of engine oil on the wall.

Stock up, but not too much.

If the COVID-19 pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that some Singaporeans love stocking up on everything – from instant noodles, toilet paper to sanitisers and disinfectants. But what drives consumers to do so? Perhaps it’s the comfort knowing that everything is readily available should you ever need it, or maybe it’s just plain ole’ kiasu-ism.

That said, it’s perfectly fine to stock up on groceries or essentials every now and then, in reasonable amounts of course. And if you’re a car owner, it’s a good idea to keep a couple of bottles of engine oil at home so that you can do your own top-ups between servicing sessions. Wet wipes are also super convenient when it comes to cleaning dusty dashboards or your hands after you’ve been checking your engine or brake fluids. They’re also handy wiping down dusty dashboards and other interior surfaces. So be sure to keep a few packs in your glove compartment! Pro tip: Wet wipes come in large sizes as well and work better for car applications.

Gang up on shipping costs.

Don’t exorbitant shipping prices really just stink? I mean surely it can’t cost THAT much to fly a tiny wallet all the way to Singapore, unless of course it’s flying first-class. If you know the feels, then fret not. One awesome way to save on shipping costs is through group buys.

It’s simple. Customers seeking out products from the same seller, place an order together so that the shipping cost is split evenly across the board and you save precious moolah! What’s more, a quick online search should lead you to forums or group buy listings on platforms such as Carousell. Easy peasy.

If you happen to be in the market for car accessories or parts like performance filters, strut bars or tyres, group buys may be available on Facebook groups and forums too – so keep a look out! Plus, joining online communities of car enthusiasts such as these could earn you a new friend or two who may have some money-saving tips and ideas for you too!

Now that you’ve picked up some money-saving tips and learnt a thing or two about shopping smart, would it be wrong to tempt you with some cool car accessories for your kids, automotive merchandise or maybe even yummy foods to whet your appetite?

That said, at AutoApp, we’re all about transparency and clear-cut policies that make sense. Find out more about how we can turn servicing your car into a stress-free experience here.

PHASE 2 TIPS: Everything about sanitisers you were too shy to ask https://www.autoapp.sg/dev/?p=2427 Sat, 20 Jun 2020 00:51:05 +0000 https://autoapp.sg/?p=2427 Congratulations! You’ve made it through the Circuit Breaker. However, this also means the crowds are coming back and so will the risk of infection. A quality sanitiser can help. Read on to learn more.

You know that one friend who’s suddenly become a health expert/logistics specialist because of the COVID-19 pandemic? It’s always, “Wow, you paid $8 for that face mask? Do you know I got it for $7.99 on Shopee?” or “Have you heard of X? It’s a rare herb from the Himalayas that boosts immunity!” And then came the day she heard you were shopping for sanitisers and it was all, “Why are you buying that? That’s not going to work on your car, you know. Don’t you know anything about choosing the best sanitisers and disinfectants?”

Well sorry, Karen. It’s not like everyone spends half their life knee-deep in health articles on Google.

But… she does have a point. Sanitisers and disinfectants have been in the spotlight since the increased emphasis on maintaining good hygiene due to the pandemic. But how much do you actually know about them? If you’ve been too embarrassed to ask know-it-all ‘friends’, or too tired to comb through the sea of articles on the interwebs, read on to find out more. We promise we won’t tell.

Is a sanitiser what I want, what I really, really want?

No one likes a hoarder.

Ah, perhaps the most important question of all! Before you check out your online shopping cart or wheel a physical one to the supermarket counter, make sure you’ve only stocked up on what you need. Are you looking for something to keep your hands clean, disinfect your living room, or get rid of that ketchup stain on your car seat? Just remember that the serious looking bottle of transparent liquid with a huge 90%-alcohol label stamped on the front won’t solve all your problems.

So let’s start. Sanitisers, disinfectants and cleaning products.

They’re all different – although some do boast a combination of the three. Cleaning sprays and products (the most common of the group) get rid of dirt, debris, and food residue but don’t remove or ‘kill’ any bacteria. They’re also mainly for use on surfaces as opposed to your hands and body.

Then there’s sanitisers and disinfectants. Sanitisers reduce contamination or bacteria to a safe level while disinfectants get rid of everything on a particular surface. Disinfectants are made up of many powerful chemicals as compared to sanitisers, which are thought to be gentler. This is likely why you’ve heard of hand sanitisers and surface sanitisers, but you’ve probably never heard of a hand disinfectant.

Disinfectants are also used for much bigger messes (which is why they’re frequently used in hospitals). In a way, they’re kinda like more powerful sanitisers. Because of their strong chemicals, you wouldn’t want to use disinfectants on surfaces that come in contact with food, toys for children, or other places where it could be ingested.

On a scale of 1 to potent Russian vodka, how much alcohol should sanitisers have?

Okay, so you’ve decided that what you really need is the perfect bottle of sanitiser. If you’ve been browsing social media enough or paying attention to COVID-19 related news, you’ve probably heard that sanitisers made up of at least 60% alcohol are most effective in getting rid of coronaviruses.

It’s true.

Sanitisers come in alcohol-based and alcohol-free versions, with the alcohol-based ones ranging from 60-95% alcohol and often containing isopropyl alcohol, ethanol, or n-propanol. Sounds cheem, right?

Long story short, alcohol-based sanitisers are sought after because alcohol can attack and destroy the envelope of protein around certain viruses. Once destroyed, it makes it tougher for the virus to survive and multiply.

Alcohol-free sanitisers on the other hand contain (brace yourself) quarternary ammonium compounds like benzalkonium chloride. These help reduce microbes but are believed to not be as effective as alcohol when fighting viruses and bacteria.

Some sanitisers smell so good, and some smell so… sterile. Why don’t people just buy the nice smelling stuff?

These oils are essential when it comes to making sanitisers smell great.

If you’re a serial sniffer and can’t walk past a Bath and Body Works outlet without buying at least one thing, you’ve probably been dying to ask this question. As tempting as that Lavender Blossom Marshmallow with Coffee Beans Sanitiser might seem, hold your horses. Some sanitisers with fragrances may actually be harsher on your skin.

Companies don’t usually list the ingredients that make up their signature scents, so you probably won’t spot any red flags on the product label. As such, you’ll never know what chemicals go into heavily fragranced sanitisers. But that said, there are some brands that use essential oils which keep their sanitisers smelling great and you feeling refreshed.

Okay, but does matter matter?

There are three main types of sanitisers on the market – gel, foam and spray sanitisers. Should you really be fussed over the difference? Well, not really.

But if we were to nit-pick, foam sanitisers cling to your hands easier than gel ones. If you’re not careful, gel sanitisers can slide off onto the floor and leave unsightly marks on it – especially on waxed floors. #proauntytip Also, foam sanitisers are kinda fun in the same way bubble baths are.

On the other hand, because they help spread droplets better over wide areas, spray type sanitisers are best for use on surfaces or objects (though there are some you can find specifically for hands).

So what’s up with ‘food-grade’ sanitisers then?

Food-grade sanitisers are best for surfaces that come in contact with food.

Food-grade sanitisers are sanitisers that can be used on surfaces that come in contact with food. As such, they’re normally used in restaurants or kitchens at home. Some food-grade sanitisers are also suited for children and their toys/belongings (seeing as little ones sometimes put anything in their mouths)! Food-grade sanitisers are generally alcohol-free, though there are some that contain food-grade alcohol such as ethanol or isopropyl alcohol.

Will my skin stay as smooth as a baby’s bottom after using sanitiser?

If you’re likely to be using sanitiser on your hands frequently, then you’ll want one that won’t dry up your skin. Alcohol-based sanitisers, though effective in eliminating bacteria, can be harmful to your skin when overused. Alcohol deprives the skin of important proteins and lipids which lead to skin dryness and irritation. To prevent this, look out for sanitisers that have moisturising ingredients such as aloe vera or water. Afterall, no one wants prunes for hands!

There’s loads of sanitisers on online shopping platforms and in stores. If they’re bottled, look pretty decent and are priced reasonably, they’re probably safe… right?

Never judge a sanitiser by its cover. Instead, check out its product label.

Knowing where your sanitiser comes from and everything that goes into it will stop you from being a victim of scalpers. If it doesn’t have a product label, stay 1 metre away from it. If its product label lists potentially toxic chemicals including sulphates, EDTA or parabens, safe distancing rules also apply. Prolonged use of sanitisers with these ingredients could be harmful to the body. And remember, just because the price is high, it doesn’t make a sanitiser legit.

Instead, choose a sanitiser or disinfectant from this list of products effective against coronaviruses collated by the National Environment Agency of Singapore. Still confused? Why not just try making your own here?

So… are there any specific sanitisers or disinfectants that will keep viruses away from my car?

Don’t give coronaviruses a free ride.

There are a number of great sanitisers and disinfectants on the market but we love the Aeris Active hospital-grade disinfectant cleaner. Not only is it on the NEA-approved list, it works just as well in your car as it would in your home. Plus, tests have also shown that it can kill coronaviruses in under 60 seconds! It removes mould and mildew, and leaves behind an invisible film to prevent recolonisation on the surface. That way, it keeps germs away for longer after use. Most importantly, it’s compatible with a majority of surfaces so it won’t damage your car’s interior.

At the risk of sounding a wee bit lazy… is there someone I could call to sanitise my car?

We were hoping you’d ask! Come next month, AutoApp will be coming up with special packages that’ll help with cleaning, disinfecting and protecting your ride. Plus, early adopters of our app will have a special treat to look out for too. Follow us on Facebook to stay in the loop!

When all’s said and done, remember that sanitisers aren’t the solution to everything. Maintaining good hygiene by washing your hands regularly and keeping a safe distance from others will help protect you and your loved ones during these trying times. Stay safe!

AUTOAPP FAVOURITES: The best father’s day gift ideas for the discerning car nut https://www.autoapp.sg/dev/?p=2207 Sat, 13 Jun 2020 19:30:36 +0000 https://autoapp.sg/?p=2207 Father’s Day 2020 is just around the corner (June 21), and there’s just about enough time to squeeze in a bit of last-minute online shopping to find the perfect gift. After all, with the way the year’s shaped up so far, everyone could probably do with a bit more cheer in their lives, and none more so than all the hard-working dads in our lives.

We don’t profess to have the perfect gift idea for all dads, but if he happens to be a car enthusiast, or is simply proud of his four-wheeled baby sitting in the carpark, we’ve got you covered. Here are AutoApp’s top car-themed gift suggestions for dear ol’ Dad.

Car T-shirts

We’re starting the list with one of the most universal gift ideas around, T-shirts. Apart from being comfy, a nice T-shirt is also a great carrier for anyone wanting to express their personality. Automotive-themed tees are available from many sources of course, but official apparel from car brands often border on the ostentatious (especially that company famous for bright red supercars), while designs from other sites tend to be a bit generic.

As you can tell, we’re big fans of Blipshift…

Our personal favourite is Blipshift, a company which produces crowdsourced ideas and designs in addition to its own. Because the designs are all created by enthusiasts, there’s none of the pretentiousness of corporate merchandise; rather, the automotive puns and memes incorporated into Blipshift’s shirts span all corners of the automotive scene and are often nudge-nudge-wink-wink in-jokes that other enthusiasts appreciate.

Each design is limited-edition by nature, as they’re only on sale for a couple of days; new designs are put up for sale every two to three days. According to Blipshift’s website, “Each shirt is available for only a few days before it is towed off to the crusher, never to be printed again”, so exclusivity is guaranteed, although popular designs sometimes get re-issued in different colour combinations.

Best of all, Blipshift shirts are really affordable, at just US$15 each! And if you can’t find anything suitable on offer at the moment, Blipshift also does gift vouchers with no expiry date so dad can jump on the design he wants whenever it pops up.

Car watches and straps

Possibly even more inextricably linked to cars than T-shirts though, are watches. Brought together by the necessity for accurate timekeeping in racing, watches have gone hand-in-hand with cars ever since. But while famous brands like Rolex, TAG Heuer, and Blancpain have a rich heritage with motorsport, their luxury status means they also have a luxury price tag to match.

Enter Dialed, Rennline, and Autodromo, smaller companies that make awesome watches inspired by BMWs, Porsches, and motorsports respectively. Most importantly, they don’t cost top-dollar – all three brands sell watches in the three-figure range, with Dialed’s, in particular, starting at under US$200.

As an even more budget-friendly option, all three brands also sell individual watch straps, with eye-catching designs based on the most iconic and well-loved racing liveries seen in motorsport.

(Side note: Dialed has temporarily halted operations during the COVID-19 period, but their products are still well worth putting on to any wish list.)

Diecast model cars

Whether it’s an unobtainable dream car, or a miniature version of the car he drives, a diecast model car makes for an excellent memento or display piece for the house or office. And there’s something to suit every space and budget too, starting at around $4-10 for a little 1/64 scale toy (standard Hot Wheels size), to $30-80 for a 1/43 scale (about palm-sized), to $120 and above for a detailed 1/18 model (about 30cm in length).

Front – rear: 1/64 Audi R8 LMS, 1/43 McLaren 675LT, 1/18 Nissan 240Z

Popular brands to keep an eye out for at the small end of the scale include Hot Wheels and Tomica, which have an extensive range of fun designs and are easily found at department stores. 1/43s like Ebbro and Minichamps are a bit more specialised, but offer the best combination of affordability, detail, and compactness. Meanwhile, 1/18s from AutoArt, Kyosho, or OttoMobile are pricey but have presence, and their level of accuracy is often mind-bogglingly astonishing.

The intricate detailing in a 1/18 Nissan Skyline GT-R race car’s engine bay; even the bonnet support is a functional piece!

Carousell is a great place to start your search, with plenty of users offering pre-orders of new models, or selling mint-condition used ones. Alternatively, you could also #supportlocal with knowledgeable and helpful home-grown retailers such as Motorsports Collectibles, Nikko AutoModels, Toyz Network, or Toykar

Learn to drift

Opportunities in Singapore for any driver to unleash his inner speed demon are virtually non-existent, so what are budding Paul Walker or Vin Diesel types to do? Well, if you’re dad’s a fan of Initial D or exciting Hollywood car chases, it’s actually possible for him to fulfill a dream and learn how to drift a car – and in this part of the world too!

Singapore Drifter’s Corner is a group that organises drift clinics together with a vendor in Malacca, Malaysia. Starting from $360 for a full-day beginner course, your dad (and yourself too, if you’re so inclined) could be smoking tyres and sliding cars sideways in no time. For that fee, all the specially-prepared drift cars, fuel, mechanic support, instruction – and most importantly, tyres – are catered for. The only thing participants need are to bring their own helmet and make a trip to Malacca.

However due to Singapore and Malaysia’s quarantine measures from COVID-19, SDC has temporarily stopped organising drift clinics, but are accepting pre-bookings with no expiry date. Perfect to incorporate into a weekend trip up north once travel restrictions end!

Exotic car rental

If heading to Malaysia is too much of a chore or risk, or dad simply wants a more stylish and luxurious experience, then an exotic car rental might just be the ticket. Ultimate Drive offers short experiences of between 15 minutes to one hour in dream supercars such as Lamborghinis, Ferraris, McLarens and Porsches.

With prices starting from US$100 for a 5-minute mini trip and rising to US$880 for a 60-minute city and highway tour, this is certainly not a cheap experience, but the sound, fury, and sheer exhilaration of a million-dollar supercar is definitely an experience to remember.

Portable jump starter

A flat car battery is an unfortunate, though sometimes inevitable annoyance when it comes to car ownership, particular during this post-Circuit Breaker period where some cars hadn’t been touched for weeks (though you’re not a victim, since you read our Circuit Breaker tips on how to maintain your car, right?). Jumper cables have been the traditional solution to fixing that particular problem, but having to flag down a passing stranger to help jump start your car can be inconvenient.

Enter the portable jump-starter. It’s basically a power bank on steroids, able to hold enough juice to jump-start a car all on its own. It can even be used as a regular power bank to charge your phone or other devices, and many models have in-built torchlights that can also double as an emergency strobe if your car breaks down. Several different brands are available and can be found on e-commerce sites such as Shopee or Lazada.

Pressure washer

Washing his car is probably one of the more common Sunday afternoon activities your dad does, and for good reason – partially because it’s therapeutic, but mostly because pampering your car is the best way to maintain its lustre and sparkle. Using a hose is the most effective method, but unfortunately isn’t possible for most of us HDB-dwellers who have to rely on the water dispensers in carpark washing bays.

Happily, these days you can buy pressure washers that don’t depend on a constant supply of running water. Again, Shopee, Lazada, and Carousell have several different options to choose from, but one that we’ve tried is the Hydroshot from American brand Worx. It’s lightweight and portable, and its water-efficient pump means you could wash a whole car straight from two buckets of water. For added convenience, it also has accessories like a soap dispenser, to make car washing effortless.

AutoApp gift vouchers

Of course, the best thing you could give your dad (or anyone for that matter), is the gift of time. And while that’s technically impossible from a fundamental physics perspective, we’ve got the next best alternative: AutoApp vouchers!

If you didn’t know by now, AutoApp is the ultimate solution in convenience when it comes to car maintenance matters. Be it repairs, servicing, grooming, or inspection, these all take a significant amount of time. With AutoApp, the waiting will be done for you, freeing up your precious time for other pursuits, with minimal disruption to your routine.

Sometimes, the simplest gifts are the best.

POWER PARENTING: Mums share baby care tips and hacks https://www.autoapp.sg/dev/?p=2170 Wed, 10 Jun 2020 14:12:47 +0000 https://autoapp.sg/?p=2170 If you’re new to this parenting gig, you might appreciate these useful baby care tips and parenting hacks to get you through the day and very long nights.

You know how sometimes you think you have everything planned out, then suddenly all your plans go out the window? Yup, that’s pretty much a day in the life of every new parent. One minute you’re peacefully sipping tea and binge-watching Netflix. The next thing you know, you’re singing Baby Shark to your little one while desperately rocking them back to sleep. When it comes to caring for a baby, you’ll soon realise that there’s no one fixed parenting method that works for all. But don’t despair. At AutoApp, we believe that the more you know, the more equipped you’ll be to handle whatever comes your way. That’s why we’ve asked mothers in Singapore to share some special baby care tips and hacks!

Rock it out.

Snug as a bug in a rug.

“My son loves getting rocked to sleep in our Konny baby carrier. He also falls asleep super quickly whenever my husband drives us around in his car!”

Joceline Tan, 27, Financial Consultant, Mum of 1

If your baby dozes off the moment they’re in the cot, count yourself lucky! Many Mums and Dads use movement to help their babies fall asleep. After all, rocking motions remind babies of their time chillin’ in the womb. While their mothers talked or moved, little ones experienced unique motions and vibrations that help soothe them even now!

Tickle, tickle.

“Whenever my girl starts crying, I lightly tickle her and she ends up laughing instead.”

Cindy Chew, 32, Marketing Executive, Mum of 1

Hearing your baby laugh is more addictive than that diet-ruining yummy snack. That’s why some parents may instinctively try tickling their little ones for a chance to hear a delightful cackle. However, there’s more to this baby care tip than meets the eye! Before you tickle your little one silly, remember that babies experience touch differently from adults since their senses are still developing. Though some babies enjoy it, tickling may be a confusing experience for other babies who may hate it (despite their laughter)! Science comes to the rescue here!

Car-ma chameleon.

Car seats help keep your baby secure on the road. Image credits: Maxi-Cosi

“My baby loves it when we take her out for a drive. We use the Maxi-Cosi car seat that fits into our Baby Zen Yoyo stroller. That way, we don’t have to wake her up to take her out of the car seat!”

Maria Wong, 32, Statistician, Mum of 1

If you drive and you’re planning to carry your baby around in the car seat for appointments, you could consider choosing one that’s compatible with a stroller so your sleepy tot gets all the Zzz’s she needs! Has finding the perfect car seat got you all confused? Check out our article on must-have baby car accessories here

Bedtime all the time.

“When I put on pyjamas for my son, he goes to sleep at any time of the day.”

Rita E., Childcare Teacher, 59, Mum of 2

Adding some routine to your baby’s day will make life easier when it comes to managing their sleeping and eating patterns! But of course, keeping to schedule can be tricky as babies tend to have a mind of their own when it comes to deciding on nap time. If this sounds like your baby, this tip might work!

Aromatherapy for tots.

Sniff sniff.

“If baby only wants her mother to put her to sleep, try draping Mummy’s shirt over Daddy, or whoever is trying to get her to sleep. And if your baby has trouble sleeping at night, try diffusing lavender oil to calm her down.”

Charmaine Foo-Cooper, 31, Homemaker, Mum of 1

There’s no denying how amazing babies smell when dirty diapers aren’t in question. But did you know that while you’re busy getting high on baby whiff, they’re busy smelling you too? In fact, their nasal cavities start developing from as early as their second month in the womb. And amazing fact – most babies can smell their mother from 1-2 feet away! That’s probably why Mummy’s clothes bring so much comfort to baby. Curious to learn more? Check out this fascinating article here!

The bolster scheme.

“If your baby often falls asleep on your arm, it’s tricky to put her back into the cot without waking her up. So I place a big pillow or bolster as an ‘arm substitute’ in the cot and my daughter never realises the difference!”

Shirley Lutan, 34, Homemaker, Mum of 1

Some babies find a crib too ‘open’ to sleep well in. Instead, they much prefer taking comfort in your warm, pillow-y arms while listening to the soothing sounds of your heartbeat! Ah, doesn’t that make you feel like taking a nap right now?

The ole’ switcheroo.

The diaper dilemma.

“When changing diapers, place a clean diaper below the one your baby’s wearing. After cleaning your baby, slide off the old diaper, secure the new one, and your baby’s all set!”

Nur Alfisyah Nonis, 31, Profession Account Manager, Mum of 3

If you’re a parent, you’re probably already familiar with the ‘rapid-fire wee’ scenario. So your baby does a wee and after minutes of wrestling with flailing arms and legs, you’re done giving him a wipe! But just as you’re reaching for a new diaper, your baby realises he’s not quite finished… And just like that, there’s wee everywhere – on the changing table, his new romper, and all over your shirt. Oh boy. To prevent situations like these, don’t forget baby care tips like the one from this Mummy!

Leave it to Daddy.

“For anything other than breastfeeding: get Daddy to do it.”

Marielle Cervas, 34, Assistant Manager, Mum of 2

You’d think that something as natural as breastfeeding should come easy, right? Nuh, uh. From low milk supply, engorgement (ouch), sore nipples to even latching problems, breastfeeding comes with a whole host of challenges of its own. That’s why it makes sense to have Daddy (or a grandparent) help out with other chores so Mummy can focus on keeping the little ones well-fed!

Baby manicure.

Slow and steady.

“Trim your baby’s nails while they’re asleep. And use a wet wipe to hold the cut nails to prevent stray bits from flying away!”

Lynn Teo, 32, Bank Associate, Mum of 2

It’s difficult to explain the unique horror parents experience when trimming their newborn’s nails for the first time. Surely these clippers won’t chip off more than just nail… And do my hands really shake that much when I’m nervous!? As daunting as it may seem, rest assured that it’s not as bad as it sounds. If you’re really worried, do it while your baby’s asleep so there’s less chance of them making sudden movements. Alternatively, check out electric nail clippers like this one from Haakaa! They take a little more time to get the job done, but they’re safer and totally painless.

Stretch and relax.

“We let our children sleep on our bed in the daytime before they learnt how to roll. We bolstered the bed edges, of course. I think they appreciated the space and it also made it easier for put-down since placing a sleeping baby in a cot without waking him up can require some skill!”

Stef T., 44, Office Manager, Mum of 3

While some babies fall asleep easier while cradled or being put in small, snug places, others love being able to stretch it out. If this sounds like your little one, you could try placing him or her on a bed or larger mattress, instead of in a crib. However, be sure that your bed is adequately protected to stop your baby from rolling off it, especially if they’re at the age when they’re starting to learn to roll!

Boss baby.

‘I’ve had loads of sleep!” said no new parent ever.

“Rest when your baby sleeps or you’ll never get to!”

Jerlin Tan, 34, Marketing Manager, Mum of 1

Unfortunately for most new parents, babies don’t sleep through the night until they’re about 3 months old, so keeping to your pre-children bedtime routine is near impossible. However, all is not lost as babies sleep 14-17 hours a day in bursts of 30-45 minutes, to as long as 3-4 hours. So as tempting as it is to watch their cherubic little faces fast asleep, get some sleep of your own!

How absolutely dull, Mother.

“When I’m trying to get my girl to sleep, I ‘bore’ her out by avoiding eye contact or talking to her. I just let her fidget herself to sleep – works like a charm!”

Joanna, 29, Admin Executive, Mum of 1

From the moment babies are born, they’re exposed to a myriad of visual and auditory stimulation. When it all gets too much, they have trouble processing things and may panic and cry. That’s why some parents employ baby care tips such as this ‘bore a baby’ technique to keep little ones calm and ready for bedtime!

Even with all these baby care tips, parenting can still get pretty crazy. If your car needs servicing and you just don’t have the time to get around to doing it, we can help. Click here for more info! And if you’re looking for ways to de-stress, why not check out these games and movies?

REDUCE YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT: Baby steps towards saving the earth https://www.autoapp.sg/dev/?p=1941 Tue, 02 Jun 2020 10:48:08 +0000 https://autoapp.sg/?p=1941 Finding it a hassle trying to reduce, reuse and recycle? Here are some other easier ways to reduce your carbon footprint and care for the planet.

If you typically work in an office, or have a desk-bound job, you might have become acutely aware of something in the last couple of work-from-home months: how hot the day can get when you’re not in a constantly air-conditioned environment. Showering more frequently, turning the AC on for longer periods of time, adding ice into every beverage, or drastic measures like sleeping next to an open fridge (please don’t) might have helped us cope so far.

Personally, dealing with the constant heat rash is no fun either. But as much as I would love to be in a cooler environment 24/7, my utilities bill is not up for that kind of challenge. And, lest we forget, global warming and climate change are big, real problems that sadly do not have easy solutions. However, small efforts will go a long way in this struggle to right climate change. By taking these baby steps, here are some of the ways you can lower your carbon footprint, reduce the effects of global warming, and help save the earth.

But first, what is a carbon footprint?

Many activities we undertake release carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that trap heat and contribute greatly to global warming. A carbon footprint is a broad way to measure the amount of greenhouse gases emitted by a human activity.

To keep it simple, any activity that consumes electricity and energy adds to the carbon footprint.

Don’t worry if you don’t know where to begin, or if you’re not ready for (yet another) lifestyle change. Awareness is always a good starting point in my book.

1. Be aware of your carbon footprint

Thankfully, you don’t need complicated formulae or extensive spreadsheets to calculate your carbon footprint. This nifty online calculator will help, and also shows how your carbon footprint compares with national and global averages. The calculator also lets you key in travel distance and other secondary activities if you want a more accurate measurement.

For now, all you will need is your latest utilities bill to roughly calculate your carbon footprint.

I calculated my household’s carbon footprint for April (a record high in the last six months, yikes), and our stay-home activities have produced 0.24 tonnes (240kg) of greenhouse gases. This ball-park figure alone is astonishing. While we don’t fare too badly against the world average, there is still plenty of room for improvement.

Once you’ve worked out what your carbon footprint is, next is to consider the ways you can reduce it (after you’ve wallowed in guilt for a bit). Your wallet will thank you in the long run too.

2. Turn off and unplug your devices when not in use

Our devices and appliances such as TVs, computers and chargers continue to draw energy when they are plugged in, even if they are not in use. Unplugging unused devices from power will reduce not just electricity consumption but also your carbon footprint.

Make it a habit by unplugging the non-essential appliances and devices before you sleep, and plug them back in in the morning to avoid disrupting your daily routine. At the very least, you will save 7 to 8 hours worth of electricity consumption.

3. Adjust the temperature and set a timer for your air conditioner

How often have we sighed in relief after escaping the heat by entering a cool, air-conditioned mall? As many of us continue to spend more time at home than out, the increase in our electricity consumption is, to some extent, inevitable. However, there are ways to beat the heat and keep your environment cool without turning on the AC for an entire day.

Every single degree of cooling consumes more energy and adds to your carbon footprint. As a guide, setting the temperature to about 24 degrees should suffice. Otherwise, try not to set the temperature to anything less than 8 degrees below the outdoor temperature. For example, if it’s a sweltering 33 degrees outside, your AC should ideally be set to 25 degrees.

At the same time, set a timer so that the air conditioner turns off automatically after 2 to 3 hours. To maintain the relative coolness in your room, keep your door closed, and turn on a fan and let it oscillate if possible. Drawing your curtains to reduce the amount of sunlight and heat coming into your room helps too. This works equally well if you are accustomed to sleeping with the AC on, and your room will remain cool throughout the night.

4. Take a cold shower

A hot shower can be a great comfort, especially when a long day at your desk gives you all sorts of neck and back aches. However, turning on the water heater also results in greenhouse gas emission and uses more energy.

In addition to not leaving the water running, why not take a cold shower instead and cool off at the same time? I see this as an absolute win. (Bonus points if you know the quote.)

5. Consume less red meat/dairy

Livestock and dairy production are actually one of the major causes of global warming. Gases from feed production and methane from cows and sheep belching contribute to almost 15 percent of man-made greenhouse gas emissions. Reducing our consumption of red meat and dairy will lower the demand and supply for these goods, and overall reduce gas emissions.

For every day that you forgo red meat and dairy, you reduce your daily carbon footprint by 3.6kg. That’s 1,316kg (1.3 tonnes) off your carbon footprint in a year! Now, that’s a very lofty ideal, so let’s come back to earth for a bit and start small.

Instead of suddenly changing your diet to a meatless/dairy-less one overnight, try doing it once a week instead. Plant-based products like tofu, tempeh and beans are good high-protein substitutes. Meatless Monday is a global initiative that encourages people to reduce their meat intake for both health and environmental reasons. They offer plenty of resources, including recipes and meat alternatives, as well as useful information on the health benefits.

To cut down dairy, try switching to plant-based milks instead, such as soy, coconut or almond milk. These can be purchased at supermarkets, or, if you are up to it, can be made fresh at home.

These simple changes will barely affect your day-to-day life, and may not have immediate, noticeable or tangible changes on the environment, though you may see less expenditure on utilities. If we all do our part and make an effort, we definitely can make a difference together!

TURBO TOTS: 7 must-have car accessories for babies https://www.autoapp.sg/dev/?p=1856 Wed, 27 May 2020 13:04:12 +0000 https://autoapp.sg/?p=1856 Prepping up to welcome your bundle of joy? Here are come must-have car accessories for babies you’re going to want to get your hands on.

So it’s almost time to welcome your bundle of joy – and we’re not talking about a new car! You’ve got your nursery all set up, confinement nanny booked, hospital bag packed and excited future grandparents calmed down. The only thing left? Getting your ride all set for the little cutie who’s on his or her way. But before you start splurging on wayyyy too many unnecessary purchases, check out our list of some must-have car accessories for babies!

1. Car seats

The vibrant Cloud Q infant car seat from Cybex. Image credits: Cybex

Ah, car seats. Definitely the first thing that comes to mind when you think of prepping your ride for your newborn. With so many different brands and types available, where do you start?

First, check out what’s available on the market.

There are currently several kinds of car seats available in stores. Here’s a quick breakdown of what to expect so you don’t get too overwhelmed with choices:

  • Baby seats/infant carriers: These are seats specifically designed for newborns, or infants under 13kg. Car seats for infants are always rearward facing.
  • Combination car seats: These are seats which can be used from birth, up to when your child grows to about 18kg.
  • Stroller compatible car seats: When out of the car, these seats can be secured onto a compatible stroller.
  • Other child seat types that shouldn’t concern you at the moment: Forward facing seats (for children around 9 months and above) as well as highback booster seats and booster cushions (for children 4 years and above).

Combination and stroller compatible car seats may come with separate infant inserts or attachments for a more secure fit, so be sure to check. Also, as a rule of thumb, the best kinds of car seats for newborns are those that allow your little one to lie as flat as possible. Avoid keeping your child in upright car seats for extended periods of time as it may restrict their breathing.

Picked one? Now let’s talk about fitting it in your car.

Car seats in Singapore can be attached via ISOFIX attachment points or fastened in place with a seat belt. Although ISOFIX-enabled seats, are thought to be safer, they can be inconvenient if you need that extra seat in your car for adults too. This is mainly because these seats and their accompanying bases, take some time to install and remove.

On the other hand, seat belt secured child seats are especially appealing to parents who plan to carry around their newborn in the car seat because they’re easy to attach and remove. The downside? While safe, you may be putting your little one at risk if the seat belt is incorrectly fastened (and believe us, this happens more often than we’d like).

Of course, don’t forget some other important factors…

These include price, unique safety features and more. Weight is also important to consider if you’re planning to detach and carry around your car seat (and newborn!) for doctor’s appointments and the like. Unless of course you’re looking to tone up those biceps.

If you’re looking for reccs…

At AutoApp we’re all about convenience and going the extra mile. Likewise, we love car accessories for babies and seats that offer loads of value. Check out the Joie Stages Convertible Car Seat that grows with your child from birth till about 7 years of age, or the Cybex Cloud Q that allows your baby to lie flat when detached, and is also compatible with Cybex strollers. Bonus points also go to the Doona Infant Car Seat Stroller which functions as both a car seat AND stroller. As far as we know, it’s the only of its kind in the market!

2. Sunshades

In the first 6 months of life, babies’ skin and eyes are extremely sensitive to sunlight. This makes them more prone to sunburn and eye damage. Before your start investing in expensive infant sunblock, here’s a more economical solution: sunshades!

Though some infant carrier car seats may come with attachable shades of their own, most do not. As such, it’s a great idea to prep up your ride’s windows with enough sunshades before the arrival of your little VIP! We love how shades like these from Sophie la Girafe come with activity arches to keep your little one entertained on the road too!

3. Travel organisers

When you’re on the road with a newborn, packing less is never more. Think you need two diapers for a 30-minute drive? Pack four. Can’t tell if one pack of wet wipes will suffice? Grab another. Afterall, an oncoming poopnami might strike leaving you in desperate search of the nearest pharmacy, all while hopelessly trying to carry a tune to quieten your crying baby. Yikes.

Travel organisers are a great way to ensure that you have room to store everything you need – from milk bottles, pacifiers, to even emergency rattles to soothe your baby. Some of the most common ones new parents use are back seat organisers like the one from Bonbijou pictured above, and car seat side organisers like this one. And for those of you who can’t bear to lose your reputation as a fashionista, there’s also this pretty hip one from Zara. What’s more, apart from being just useful car accessories for babies, travel organisers are great for holding loads of items for your next family road trip! Whatever your preference, the most important thing is that they’re able to neatly hold all your little one’s essentials securely.

4. Car seat protectors

As much as you’re going to want to make sure your little one is nice and snug, don’t forget that your trusty steed needs some TLC too. So once you’ve chosen your child seat, be sure to invest in car seat protectors. These convenient mats will help protect your car seats against scratches from the ISOFIX base or the child seat itself. Plus, some like the Diono Ultra Mat pictured above, or the Snapkis Protector Mat come with attached pockets for baby essentials too. As an added bonus, they may also be able to catch dribbles of milk or drool from your newborn!

5. Child rear view mirror

If you’re planning on travelling alone with your little one, you probably already know that keeping an eye on him or her is going to be a challenge, especially since infant car seats are rearward facing. That’s why the next item on our list is the ultra handy child rear view mirror – a simple solution to an otherwise anxiety inducing problem! There are various types and brands available, such as the one from Safety 1st that easily attaches to the rear window, or the mirror by BeSafe that hangs over the headrest of your back seat. Best of all, these mirrors can also be easily adjusted to a forward-facing position once your baby gets a little older!

6. Baby belt collectors

Most babies love getting all cosy in swaddles and other snug places because it reminds them of chillin’ in the womb. But every now and then we come across a little Houdini. That one baby that somehow manages to wriggle out of every swaddle and gets cranky when you cuddle them a lil’ too tight. Wanna bet how quick he’s gonna escape from underneath the harness of your child seat?

If your baby matches this description to the tee then you might want to check out belt collectors. One of the most overlooked car accessories for babies, this nifty gadget helps hold shoulder belts in place so your little one is snug and secure all ride through. Can’t wait to get it? Good news as the one from BeSafe is available on Taxi Baby!

7. Car toys

It’s always fun with the North Pole Feet Fun Car Toy from TafToys. Image credits: TafToys

Babies are simple creatures. All they need is milk, sleep, clean diapers, a little burp here and there, and of course, CONSTANT attention. Okay, that may be a slight exaggeration. But there’s no denying that all babies need to be adequately stimulated and entertained for their development.

Despite there being plenty of toys available for newborns, only a few are specifically created for use in cars. We like this one by Taf Toys that works like a mobile play gym. You simply hook it on to the back seat head rest and your little one is free to touch and feel the colourful toys, while you focus on the road!
