How Does ACOTY Define This Class?

Every EV that qualifies for this category needs to be either performance-oriented, or pack a “respectfully” absurd amount of power under the hood. Simple, right?

Meet The Contenders

Of course we have to start with the reason why this category is so interesting in the first place, with the Porsche Taycan. A car that can corner just as, if not faster than a 911, and still seats four or five in relative comfort. Anyone who has driven one would tell you its simply addictive.

Lotus is on a roll this year, and the Emeya is one fine luxury bullet that can zip you to destinations in no time at all. Plus, you look damn good while doing so.

Even though it’s an SUV, we had to include the Audi SQ8 e-tron into the mix. This triple motor behemoth trumps most things on the roads, and it still comes with a large cabin and premium appointments for the discerning businessman.

If Swedish sensibleness is more of your thing, the Polestar 4 might be the car favoured to win. This new-age coupe SUV does away with the rear glass panel entirely, producing a serene cabin bubble for rear occupants. Plus, it is touted as Polestar’s most powerful vehicle to date. Striking words indeed.

If you can settle for a little less power, the dual motor Polestar 2 is still a formidable machine to pilot. Coupled with Ohlins suspension and sticky tyres, and you can give some of the track day guys a serious run for their money.

Tough fight, and there’s no clear winner. But…

You can’t beat the king, and that king is the Porsche Taycan with 399 points. It is simple exhilarating to drive, and truly showcases what true performance EVs are capable of pushing.

Congratulations to the Porsche Taycan for winning the AutoApp Car of the Year 2025 Best Performance EV!

ACOTY 2025 – Best Cat B MPV EV https://www.autoapp.sg/dev/?p=279598 Mon, 09 Dec 2024 12:49:26 +0000 https://www.autoapp.sg/?p=279598 Three electric multipurpose vehicles go toe to toe for the title of ACOTY’s Best Cat B MPV EV.

How Does ACOTY Define This Class?

Every Multipurpose Vehicle (MPV) that qualifies for this category needs to be powered and propelled solely by electricity from battery packs and sold with a Category B Certificate of Entitlement (Cat B COE). Easy peasy.

Meet The Contenders

Representing the UK is the MG M9 (left), flying China’s flag is the Denza D9 Grandeur (right), and championing Germany is the Opel Combo e-Life.

The MG M9 is capacious and comfortably seats seven. It’s loaded with features and creature comforts, tech is pretty good, and is practical to the hilt. Despite it’s huge size, the M9 looks sharp from the front and rear. It’s silent, brisk and rides very smoothly.

The Denza D9 Grandeur is BYD’s answer to premium MPVs. It looks bold on the outside, sumptuously appointed with upmarket looking and feeling materials on the inside, and tech is well integrated. Lots of features and creature comforts abound for occupants to play with as the D9 glides along in almost eerie silence and soaks up undulations along the way.

The Opel Combo e-Life prefers to keep things simple, down to earth and practical. Its got an airy ambience on the inside, hard-wearing materials that will likely stand up to abuse from the young’uns, and sufficient tech to get things done but not get in the way. It rides smooth, relaxed and silent, and will keep your clan happy on the obligatory family outings.

Three came, but there’s one clear winner.

The Denza D9 Grandeur takes the W with 423 points. Despite being BYD’s first foray into the premium segment, the D9 knocks it out of the park. The way ‘upmarket’ is executed here is just brilliant, and it showed with the final decision being unanimous.

ACOTY 2025 – Best Cat B Dual Motor SUV EV https://www.autoapp.sg/dev/?p=279568 Mon, 09 Dec 2024 12:44:02 +0000 https://www.autoapp.sg/?p=279568 Nine electric SUVs go to battle for the accolade of ACOTY’s Best Cat B Dual Motor SUV EV.

How Does ACOTY Define This Class?

Every Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) that qualifies for this category needs to be powered solely by electricity from battery packs, propelled by two electric motors and sold with a Category B Certificate of Entitlement (Cat B COE).

Meet The Contenders

First, the Asians. Clockwise, from top left, representing South Korea are the Hyundai IONIQ 5 Inspiration AWD and Kia EV9 GT-Line, and flying China’s flag is the Zeekr X AWD.

zeekr_X

Next, a Brit and two Germans. Clockwise, from top left, the Mini Countryman SE ALL4, Smart #1 Brabus, and Porsche Macan 4 respectively.

Finally, a German duo and a Czech. Clockwise, from top left, the Volkswagen ID.4 GTX and ID.5 GTX, and Skoda Enyaq Coupe vRS respectively.

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 Inspiration AWD enters the Cat B Dual Motor SUV EV game with a blocky yet curvy physique, lots of tech and creature comforts, space and practicality for days. It also features discreet yet properly-potent performance that’ll knock your socks off.

If it’s a large SUV EV you want, the Kia EV9 has you covered. Imposing and enormous on the outside, cavernous on the inside, the EV9 comes festooned with tech and creature comforts. Brisk on its wheels, comfortable and quiet on the move, this behemoth of an SUV EV has a lot going for it.

The Zeekr X AWD covers the 0-100km/h sprint in 3.8 seconds, courtesy of 428hp and 534Nm of torque. But don’t let those stats scare you. It can also carry five in a premium-feeling, tech-centric and practical cabin in quietness and relative comfort.

For more practicality and the famous badge, the Mini Countryman SE ALL4 hits the spot in the Cat B dual motor SUV EV segment. It’s got the desirable Mini looks and design language. Its interior is cheerful, with suitable tech, pretty good space and practicality. It’s zippy and able to cruise in comfort and silence.

Curves, cuteness and performance beget the Smart #1 Brabus. It’s pretty spacious inside, with colourful displays and juxtaposed light and dark materials that speak of electric muscle. Loaded with tech and good features, this Brabus is keen to blast off and be playful through corners.

For an EV SUV with a badge that stands for sportiness, look no further than the Porsche Macan 4. It sure looks like a Macan, albeit updated for the present. It goes, turns and stops like a Macan should. And it’s got a pretty spacious and practical interior with the right amount of tech. Nice!

The Volkswagen ID.4 GTX brings the essentials over from its non-GTX variant. It’s easy to drive, well-behaved on the road, employs good-feeling materials on the interior and is pretty spacious and practical. Add to that more traction from power being sent to all four wheels, and a modest increase in power, and the ID.4 GTX feels a bit more zippy without any added nausea.

Pretty much the same can be said about its sibling, the Volkswagen ID.5 GTX. It’s essentially the ID.4 GTX but with a more attractive sloping coupe-like roofline and more street cred to boot. If sleeker looks matter, then the ID.5 GTX is the way to go.

Which then brings us to the Skoda Enyaq Coupe vRS. Sharing the same platform as the earlier two Veedubs, the Enyaq adds thoughtful user-friendly touches on the inside. It’s spacious and practical, and its tech-integration is more thoughtful than VW’s. It looks smart and sharp, is pretty quick and handles corners very well.

Nine came to battle, and one stood tall.

ACOTY 2025 – Best Cat B Single Motor SUV EV https://www.autoapp.sg/dev/?p=279560 Mon, 09 Dec 2024 12:38:57 +0000 https://www.autoapp.sg/?p=279560 Four electric SUVs slug it out for the title of ACOTY’s Best Cat B Single Motor SUV EV.

How Does ACOTY Define This Class?

Every Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) that qualifies for this category needs to be powered solely by electricity from battery packs, propelled by a single electric motor, sold with a Category B Certificate of Entitlement (Cat B COE), and priced above S$250,000 in Singapore’s market.

Meet The Contenders

Representing Stuttgart, Germany are two facelifted Mercedes-Benz siblings, the EQA (left) and EQB (right).

Flying the flag for Ingolstadt, Germany is the Audi Q4 e-tron (left), and championing Japan is the Nissan Ariya (right).

Nissan Ariya

The Mercedes-Benz EQA takes the efficiency-driven EQ design aesthetic and shrink-wraps it onto a more petite package. With plush and upmarket-feeling materials on the inside, along with sufficient tech to keep younger owners happy, the EQA offers a silent cruise to those who journey within it.

The Mercedes-Benz EQB, brings a taller and more practical body shape to the Cat B single motor SUV game. It’s more spacious on the inside, can seat seven in a pinch, and has sufficient tech. It’s easy to drive, easy to place, and silent and comfortable on the move.

The Audi Q4 e-tron offers a silent, smooth and refined ride in a coupe-like body style. However, it can also cleanly carve out corners if one so desires. Audi’s implementation of tech is spot-on without being overboard, and the interior feels upmarket and is practical.

The Japanese take on the Cat B single motor EV SUV comes in the form of the Nissan Ariya. Futuristic and familiar feeling, the Ariya is streamlined and elegant on the outside and upmarket-minimalist on the inside. With well-integrated tech, it’s spacious, practical and drives with the agility of a sports car.

ACOTY 2025 – Best Budget SUV EV https://www.autoapp.sg/dev/?p=279551 Mon, 09 Dec 2024 12:32:53 +0000 https://www.autoapp.sg/?p=279551 Seven affordable SUV EVs battle for the title of ACOTY’s Best Budget SUV EV.

How Does ACOTY Define This Class?

Every Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) that qualifies for this category needs to be powered solely by electricity from battery packs, propelled by only one electric motor, sold with a Category B Certificate of Entitlement (Cat B COE) and priced at or below S$250,000 with COE.

Imagine calling a quarter of a million dollars ‘affordable.‘ Welcome to Singapore, folks!

Meet The Contenders

Flying the Swedish flag is the Volvo EX30 (left), and representing Germany is the Smart #1 Pro+ (right).

Next, also representing Germany in the form of two Volkswagen siblings are the ID.4 (left) and ID.5 (right).

Finally we have a trio of SUV EVs hailing from China. Clockwise, from top left, are the Zeekr X Standard, XPeng G6 Long Range and Omoda E5.

The Volvo EX30 has a sharp, muscular exterior that looks fresh. Its interior is tech-centric, yet minimalist and the material quality make it a pleasant place to be. Its ride quality is excellent and the EX30 is easy to pootle about in town. Plus, it has enough grunt to put a surprised smile on your face.

If its curves and cuteness you’re after, the Smart #1 Pro+ has you covered. This compact SUV EV is pretty spacious inside, and its colourful displays and light materials offer a refreshingly pleasant environment. With lots of tech and good features, the #1 Pro+ doesn’t just look attractive but it can also go like the clappers.

The Volkswagen ID.4 is easy to drive and well-behaved on the roads. It employs materials on the interior that feel good and lift airiness. Speaking of the latter, it’s also pretty spacious and practical. All of this wrapped up in a pleasant exterior that takes design cues from Volkswagens of yore.

Its sibling, the Volkswagen ID.5 is essentially the ID.4 but with a sloping coupe-esque roofline. Street cred instantly upped. It’s also is easy to drive, has an interior that feels airy and is still quite practical and spacious. If sleeker looks matter, then the ID.5 is definitely up your alley.

Sharing the same platform as the Smart #1 and the Volvo EX30, the Zeekr X has a design that can be described as quirky and polarizing. It’s quick on its wheels and will delight its owner with a tech-focused interior and with materials and colours that are pleasing to the eye and skin. Plus it has some fun and quirky tricks up its sleeve too.

The XPeng G6 is keen to flex its eco credentials. With a smooth and sleek facade, brisk and instant acceleration and quiet cruising, the G6 also offers tech-up-the-wazoo on the inside, along with a pleasant unpretentious vibe. Plus it’s spacious and practical too.

That the Omoda E5 looks like a Japanese SUV speaks well to its design language. Its swooping in the right places and sharp in others. The interior feels pretty posh, is tech-centric and is spacious and pretty practical. The E5 delivers a nice and smooth gentle cruise, for this is its raison d’être.

Seven diverse choices. Which to crown the winner?

ACOTY 2025 – Best Premium Sedan EV https://www.autoapp.sg/dev/?p=279537 Mon, 09 Dec 2024 12:27:43 +0000 https://www.autoapp.sg/?p=279537 Four silent sedans thunder in to fight for the title of ACOTY’s Best Premium Sedan EV.

How Does ACOTY Define This Class?

Every premium sedan that qualifies for this category needs to be powered and propelled solely by electricity from battery packs, sold with a Category B Certificate of Entitlement (Cat B COE), and priced mid-to-upper table in Singapore’s market.

Meet The Contenders

Representing Bavaria, Germany is the BMW i5 eDrive40 (left). Championing the UK is the Lotus Emeya S (right).

Flying the Swedish flag is the Polestar 2 Standard range Single motor (left). And singing the song of Stuttgart, Germany is the Porsche Taycan (right).

Owing to its wheelbase that’s longer than that of an E65 standard-wheelbase 7 Series from the 2000s, the BMW i5 is very spacious on the inside for passengers.

It feels upmarket and executive, is festooned with tech and premium materials, and is quick and comfortable. The i5 is an excellent middle-ground for those who don’t want to step up to an i7.

Sleek, swooping lines define the Lotus Emeya. A departure from Lotuses of yore, this is the company’s first four door supercar-sedan Hyper-GT.

With a bold, almost decadent interior, the Emeya is tech-centric, spacious and practical. Plus it has performance that will rip your face off and leave it splattered on the inside of the sloping rear windscreen, with Cheshire-cat grin still intact.

The revised Polestar 2 adopts rear-wheel drive and is better for it. Its suspension has also been reworked, making it a better cruiser than before.

Despite being tech-centric, minimalism is still the theme here, but there’s nothing minimalist about the way it goes. It’s also pretty practical and a nice place to be.

Say Porsche Taycan and pretty much everyone will know that you’re referring to a performance-oriented premium sedan EV. Practical, and with sufficient tech, the Taycan is also comfortable on the cruise while being able to dance through corners. And it’s fast!

Four varied choices, but there was one clear winner.

How Does ACOTY Define This Class?

Every sedan that qualifies for this category needs to be powered and propelled solely by electricity from battery packs, and sold with a Category B Certificate of Entitlement (Cat B COE). Done.

Meet The Contenders

Clockwise, from top left, firstly representing China is the BYD Seal Performance. Next, flying the South Korean flag is the Hyundai IONIQ 6 Prestige 77kWh. Finally, championing USA is the Tesla Model 3 Highland.

The BYD Seal’s sharp, muscular looks turns heads wherever it goes. People stop and point, and this speaks volumes to BYD’s design language. Lots of tech features on the inside, along with creature comforts. And its performance can snap your neck and make your passengers scream with glee.

No prizes for guessing which one of us still refers to the Hyundai IONIQ 6 as “my Korean Saab.” Insert lots of lovey-dovey emojis before and after.

Love or hate it, it’s got a very unique look that turns snaps heads as it glides silently by. Add to that a technology-infused interior, sufficient passenger space, decent ride comfort and fast charging, and you’ve got yourself a very unique Cat B Sedan EV here.

The Tesla Model 3 is readily recognised on the roads. With an ultra-minimalist theme both inside and out, tech up the wazoo, uniquely-Tesla quirks and stable yet playful characteristics, the Model 3 has every right to be in this competition.

Exciting, innit?

ACOTY 2025 – Best Cat A SUV EV https://www.autoapp.sg/dev/?p=279140 Mon, 09 Dec 2024 10:32:07 +0000 https://www.autoapp.sg/?p=279140 It’s a battle royale between six Cat A SUV EV contenders for this category’s championship.

How Does ACOTY Define This Class?

First, each contender needs to be a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV). Next, they must be powered and propelled solely by electricity from battery packs. Finally, they need to be sold with a Category A Certificate of Entitlement (Cat A COE). Done deal.

Meet The Contenders

The first two are Bavarian. They are the BMW iX1 (left) and BMW iX2 (right).

The next three are from parent company Stellantis. They are the Citroen e-C4 X (left), Opel Mokka-e (right) and Peugeot e-2008 GT.

Finally, we have the sole South Korean of the group, the Hyundai Kona Electric.

Let the battle royale commence!

The BMW iX1 offers much more space and practicality compared to the previous-generation X1, but now with pure electric propulsion.

With an easily recognisable exterior, sufficient technology and an upmarket interior combined with a smooth yet engaging drive, the iX1 comes into this competition swinging for gold.

As does its coupe-sibling, the BMW iX2. Nearly everything that’s been said about the iX1 also applies here, albeit with a more sleek and audacious four-door SUV coupe body style.

Being the M Sport variant, a more sporty stance and driving experience sets the iX2 apart from its full-SUV brethren. Tech abounds on the inside, as does premium-feeling materials that exude the right levels of ostentatiousness that a BMW should.

The Citroen e-C4 X is practical and brings French flair to this Cat A electric SUV segment. Being a Citroen, one can expect a plush and comfortable ride, even over those tiny ‘killer’ humps that are found in shopping mall and industrial building carparks.

If you need a simple electric SUV, the Opel Mokka-e may be right up your alley. It’s straightforward and no-nonsense, meaning it’s easy to drive and park. With good ride comfort, practicality and smartphone integration, the Mokka-e is designed for those who just want to get on with the journey.

As with the pre-facelift, the Peugeot e-2008 GT is as quirky as French cars come. This time, it features wireless smartphone integration, a slightly larger battery pack and improved efficiency.

Its ride comfort is good, but it can also take corners pretty enthusiastically. And yet again, for its compactness, the interior is rather usable, and once past its French quirks, one can get comfy with the e-2008 GT quite quickly.

The Cyberpunk-looking Hyundai Kona Electric is sure to turn heads as one drives past. With an interior festooned with technology and creature comforts, and with a driving experience that’s surprisingly agile, there’s much to like about this SUV EV.

Six compelling Cat A SUV EV contestants, and only one can be crowned the winner.

Opel Mokka-e Review – German Glider https://www.autoapp.sg/dev/?p=273531 Fri, 12 Apr 2024 10:08:20 +0000 https://www.autoapp.sg/?p=273531 Mokka-e represents electric-powered value-motoring.

At the value-end of the electric vehicle (EV) market, one finds a slew of offerings such as the BYD Atto 3, Citroen e-C4 and Hyundai Kona Electric. Amongst them, one also finds the Opel Mokka-e from the Stellantis stable.

Being so spoilt for choice, does the Mokka-e have what it takes to sway buyers to this German compact crossover?

die Außenseite

One first notices how the Mokka-e sits somewhat higher off the ground. This makes ingress and egress a much easier proposition than compact sedans and hatchbacks.

The design language here is rather clean, interspersed by black plastic trim and a blacked-out front emblem and roof that play nicely against the test car’s White Banquise paintwork.

Murdered out 17-inch rims wearing 215/60 R17 Michelin Primacy 4 tyres help raise visual aggression levels a tad while contrasting nicely with the bodywork.

The clean design aesthetic carries on to the rump, where one finds a small roof spoiler, sleek tail lamps and one of my favourite features, a black ‘diffuser’ housing the bright red rear foglight below the bumper line.

das Innere

Swing open the hatch to find 350 litres of boot space, and if more is needed, the rear seatbacks can be lowered in a 60:40 split to liberate additional carrying capacity, to the tune of 1,105 litres.

I had the privilege of ferrying two pairs of female passengers in the rear, with one pair in their 20s and the other in their golden years. All rear-seat passengers complimented the good comfort and ride quality of the Mokka-e.

Naturally, longer-of-limbs and shorter-of-torso 1.82-metre tall yours truly wouldn’t be able to sit directly behind his driving position, but it wasn’t an issue for more petite individuals.

Two USB Type-A ports are available in the rear to charge mobile devices, but I found it curious that there were no overhead grab handles or dome lights in the back.

The front seats are manually adjusted, and comfortable for longer journeys. I was easily and quickly able to find my ideal driving position courtesy of the manual adjusters. See, electrical adjustments are not always the fastest.

Then it’s just a simple case of reach- and rake-adjusting the steering wheel to one’s ideal arms-length.

standard-cruise controls
audio & telephony controls

Ahead of the steering wheel sits a 12-inch instrument cluster screen. One can toggle the screen to display myriad information, including a trip computer, navigation and a minimalist display, through a rocker selector and button on the turn-signal stalk.

The 10-inch touchscreen infotainment is basic, but features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which is what will mostly be used. The audio system, though basic, can play clear and loud.

infotainment system with physical shortcuts, door-lock & hazard light buttons

Climate controls are physical (hooray!) and easy to adjust on the move.

wireless mobile phone charge pad & buttons to toggle vehicle functions
drive selector, drive mode selector & parking brake rocker

A couple of cupholders can be found behind the centre console, along with an adjustable armrest that, once slid forward, obscures one of the cupholders. You could stow a short stubby can of classic Red Bull there though.

Not a big concern, for the front door pockets, can accommodate larger water bottles.

das Fahren

The Mokka-e is easy to drive and park. Outward visibility is excellent owing to large glass panels, and even reversing without the camera is a cinch thanks to the large wing mirrors.

Those wing mirrors also house blind-spot warning indicators which glow bright orange, so they’re easy to pick up on. The lane-keeping system, however, is a bit too over-enthusiastic and is best turned off via the button in the centre console.

On the move, ride comfort is great, especially in the rear, and the Mokka-e never gets too fidgety. It can even be momentum-driven through a bend or corner, but push it and it will begrudgingly comply under protest. This is a compact crossover for cruising, not bruising.

Cruising comes courtesy of its 132hp and 260Nm electric motor which drives the front wheels.

Propulsion juice comes courtesy of a 50kW battery pack, and the Mokka-e is fitted with an 11kW onboard charger, which can take the battery from flat to 100% in just 4.5 hours at a suitable AC charger.

It can also accept faster DC charging at 50kW, and I was able to charge it from 25%-90% in about 38 minutes, which is good.

Opel claims a WLTP average efficiency of 14.5kWh/100km or 6.9km/kWh. I was able to better this at a weighted and normalised average of 14.16kWh/100km or 7.1km/kWh during my drive.

pure street
mostly highway

Considering the 50kW battery capacity vis-a-vis the average efficiency during my drive, around 355km is doable on a full charge. I just wish the battery was slightly larger for 400km of range in between charges.

Naturally, your mileage may vary with driving style and use case, but the key to good efficiency, as always, is to drive smoothly, not slow.

The Opel Mokka-e makes a compelling proposition for those who want a simple, straightforward and cost-effective EV-ownership proposition. It rides well, is easy to drive and park charges relatively quickly and is pleasant to look at.

Does it make the cut for you? Take a test drive and see if the Mokka-e is your flavour of coffee bean.

Notable launches at Singapore Motor Show 2024 https://www.autoapp.sg/dev/?p=270872 Fri, 12 Jan 2024 21:42:30 +0000 https://autoapp.sg/?p=270872 ICE, hybrids, EVs and concept vehicles for all to view at the Singapore Motor Show 2024.

The Singapore Motor Show 2024 opened for public viewing on 11 January 2024. Some new cars and concept vehicles were launched and/or shown, and here are the notable ones.

Audi

Another e-tron-badged EV joins the Singapore market line-up as the Q4 Sportback e-tron was unveiled. Expect a couple of different trim levels featuring up to 286hp courtesy of one or two electric motors, 0-100km/h in up to 5.4 seconds, and a claimed WLTP range of up to 544km.

Also check out the SQ8 Sportback e-tron (not pictured) at the Audi stand. You can’t miss it in bright red.

BMW

Two new models were unveiled at the Singapore Motor Show 2024.

Representing electrification is the BMW iX1. Readers would know that its X1 ICE sibling won the AutoApp Car of the Year 2024 award, and here’s an electrified version that brings about more quietness to the commute.

If an SUV SAV coupe body style is more your thing, the X2 is now available for purchase. Looks stylish, especially in the show car’s bright red hue.

If you like the X1 but need more oomph, the X1 M35i is also available for sale and can be seen at BMW’s stand. With 300hp from its two-litre turbocharged engine and sent to all four wheels, the 0-100km/h sprint is dispatched in a scant 5.4 seconds.

Also on display for the first time in Singapore is the i5 M60. 601 fully electric horsepower put to the road through all four wheels means you’ll be shoved deep into your seat as 100km/h comes and goes in a heady 3.8 seconds while you silently rush past everyone else on the way to that all-important board meeting.

Citroën

The e-C4X is touted as Citroën’s first fully electric sedan. Carrying on the design language seen in the e-C4 from 2023, this quirky lifted sedan is eye-catching but not in a garish way, just how a Citroën should be. We look forward to an oh-so cushy and comfy quiet ride in the e-C4X.

Denza

BYD’s luxury brand Denza is in Singapore with the D9 MPV EV. The D9 is expected to make its way later this year and is said to be available in both two- and all-wheel drive variants. A sumptuously appointed interior speaks to the upmarket credentials of Denza, and we’ll have more to come when we get behind the wheel on our roads.

You’ll find the D9 and other BYD models including the facelifted Atto 3 at BYD’s stand at Suntec City Convention Centre Atrium beside Uniqlo.

Honda

The 2024 CR-V was launched in both five- and seven-seater configurations. Both feature a 1.5-litre turbo VTEC engine that puts out 193hp and 243Nm of torque through a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

The CR-V has traditionally been regarded as a highly accomplished family SUV, and we have no doubt that this new 2024 model continues that tradition.

Hyundai

Tucked away neatly but menacingly in the corner of the Hyundai stand is the IONIQ 5 N. 650hp, 770Nm of torque, a blistering 0-100km/h time of 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 260km/h is all you need to know. It’s not actually available for sale in Singapore but who knows… some day…. some… day….

Also at the Hyundai stand are three COE Category A or Cat A cars to take note of.

The first is the Avante, the only hybrid sedan in its class in Cat A. Next up is the IONIQ 6 EV, or what I affectionately call “my Korean Saab,” which is now available as a Cat A model. Finally there’s the Kona EV, which sits in Cat A.

All very compelling options for buyers who don’t want to look at Cat B vehicles.

KIA

The angular and spacious EV9 was unveiled at KIA’s stand, but don’t let its boxy stature fool you. Featuring a drag coefficient of just 0.28 and built on the E-GMP platform, this 7-seater is likely to outrun many other similarly spacious SUVs on our roads.

Lexus

The LBX is Lexus’ compact SUV for the first time eco-conscious luxury car buyer who prefers the splash-and-dash convenience of a self-charging hybrid drivetrain while enjoying excellent fuel economy.

Additionally, the interior is very upmarket for its class and Lexus is said to provide over-the-air (OTA) updates to keep the infotainment system current with new features and improved performance.

Mercedes-Benz

In a Tron-meets-Geländewagen synastry, the EQG EV concept was unveiled to much ooohs and aaahs all around. This foreshadows an electric G wagon that’s said to arrive later this year as the EQG. Can’t wait to see that!

Also at the Mercedes-Benz stand is the Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance (not pictured). If our recent Mercedes-AMG C63 F1 Edition article caught your attention, you definitely want to check the C63 S E Performance out.

MINI

The concept Aceman is on display over at Mini’s stand. The future of MINI is electrified, and the Acemen drops clues as to what can be expected with the next new Mini model as an electric vehicle (EV.)

MG

Headlining things over at the MG stand is the Cyberster, a fist-bitingly gorgeous cabriolet EV. With 536hp from two electric motors, 100km/h from a dig comes in a wig-ripping 3.2 seconds. That the roof also goes up and comes down in just 10 seconds is a plus, but when you open the doors, be enthralled as they scissor skywards.

Just be careful of low-ceiling multistorey carparks though, for it swings taller than the 1.84-metre tall MG9 MPV beside it.

Nissan

The 2024 Nissan Serena e-Power was unveiled for the family buyer in both Premium 8-seater and Highway Star Prestige 7-seater configurations. This Serena features the second generation e-Power technology along with a more powerful 1.4-litre turbocharged engine that works as a generator to charge its battery and power the electric motor.

Omoda

Not many details on the E5, but we’re told that it will only be available in Singapore as an EV. Looks pretty slick though, and has a technology-focused interior to keep the tech enthusiast satiated.

ORA

After a positive response and strong showing in 2023 with the Good Cat, ORA is starting 2024 with a bang with the 07. Baby Panamera anyone? Sure looks the part. The ORA 07 is said to be available in Singapore from the latter half of this year.

Polestar

In addition to the Polestar 3 that debuted in Singapore last year, what grabbed everyone’s attention was the drop-dead gorgeous Electric Roadster concept that was built to showcase Polestar’s vision for the future of electric sports cars. This is just a clay model, so don’t lean on it.

Subaru

If you’ve always wanted your WRX (left) or Crosstrek (right) tarted up to look more aggressive and purposeful, check out both of these vehicles in GT Edition.

The Subaru BRZ STI (not pictured) is also on display with similar aesthetic and handling improvements from the in-house performance wing Subaru Technica International (STI).

Suzuki

The Jimny may not be a new car, but this latest-generation five-door variant is new to the Singapore market. Manufactured in India by Maruti Suzuki, this five-door Jimny adds more practicality to its already adorable and plucky nature.

Volvo

The quickest accelerating production Volvo to date, the all-electric EX30, was launched at the 2024 Singapore Motor Show. In dual motor all-wheel drive configuration, the EX30 uses 422hp to power its way to 100km/h in just 3.6 seconds. Rear-wheel drive single motor variants will feature 268hp for both standard and long-range guise.

The EX30 is also Volvo’s most compact EV SUV in its model line-up.

Singapore Motor Show 2024 runs from 11 to 14 January at Suntec City Convention Centre Levels 3 & 4, and tickets are available for purchase online and on-site at Level 3 Concourse.
