How Does ACOTY Define This Class?

Every Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) that qualifies for this category needs to be powered solely by electricity from battery packs, propelled by a single electric motor, sold with a Category B Certificate of Entitlement (Cat B COE), and priced above S$250,000 in Singapore’s market.

Meet The Contenders

Representing Stuttgart, Germany are two facelifted Mercedes-Benz siblings, the EQA (left) and EQB (right).

Flying the flag for Ingolstadt, Germany is the Audi Q4 e-tron (left), and championing Japan is the Nissan Ariya (right).

Nissan Ariya

The Mercedes-Benz EQA takes the efficiency-driven EQ design aesthetic and shrink-wraps it onto a more petite package. With plush and upmarket-feeling materials on the inside, along with sufficient tech to keep younger owners happy, the EQA offers a silent cruise to those who journey within it.

The Mercedes-Benz EQB, brings a taller and more practical body shape to the Cat B single motor SUV game. It’s more spacious on the inside, can seat seven in a pinch, and has sufficient tech. It’s easy to drive, easy to place, and silent and comfortable on the move.

The Audi Q4 e-tron offers a silent, smooth and refined ride in a coupe-like body style. However, it can also cleanly carve out corners if one so desires. Audi’s implementation of tech is spot-on without being overboard, and the interior feels upmarket and is practical.

The Japanese take on the Cat B single motor EV SUV comes in the form of the Nissan Ariya. Futuristic and familiar feeling, the Ariya is streamlined and elegant on the outside and upmarket-minimalist on the inside. With well-integrated tech, it’s spacious, practical and drives with the agility of a sports car.

Decisions, decisions…

ACOTY 2025 – Best Premium Sedan EV https://www.autoapp.sg/dev/?p=279537 Mon, 09 Dec 2024 12:27:43 +0000 https://www.autoapp.sg/?p=279537 Four silent sedans thunder in to fight for the title of ACOTY’s Best Premium Sedan EV.

How Does ACOTY Define This Class?

Every premium sedan that qualifies for this category needs to be powered and propelled solely by electricity from battery packs, sold with a Category B Certificate of Entitlement (Cat B COE), and priced mid-to-upper table in Singapore’s market.

Meet The Contenders

Representing Bavaria, Germany is the BMW i5 eDrive40 (left). Championing the UK is the Lotus Emeya S (right).

Flying the Swedish flag is the Polestar 2 Standard range Single motor (left). And singing the song of Stuttgart, Germany is the Porsche Taycan (right).

Owing to its wheelbase that’s longer than that of an E65 standard-wheelbase 7 Series from the 2000s, the BMW i5 is very spacious on the inside for passengers.

It feels upmarket and executive, is festooned with tech and premium materials, and is quick and comfortable. The i5 is an excellent middle-ground for those who don’t want to step up to an i7.

Sleek, swooping lines define the Lotus Emeya. A departure from Lotuses of yore, this is the company’s first four door supercar-sedan Hyper-GT.

With a bold, almost decadent interior, the Emeya is tech-centric, spacious and practical. Plus it has performance that will rip your face off and leave it splattered on the inside of the sloping rear windscreen, with Cheshire-cat grin still intact.

The revised Polestar 2 adopts rear-wheel drive and is better for it. Its suspension has also been reworked, making it a better cruiser than before.

Despite being tech-centric, minimalism is still the theme here, but there’s nothing minimalist about the way it goes. It’s also pretty practical and a nice place to be.

Say Porsche Taycan and pretty much everyone will know that you’re referring to a performance-oriented premium sedan EV. Practical, and with sufficient tech, the Taycan is also comfortable on the cruise while being able to dance through corners. And it’s fast!

Four varied choices, but there was one clear winner.

ACOTY 2025 – Best Cat B MPV https://www.autoapp.sg/dev/?p=279184 Mon, 09 Dec 2024 10:41:21 +0000 https://www.autoapp.sg/?p=279184 Four multi-purpose vehicles or ‘minivans’ battle for the Best Cat B MPV championship.

How Does ACOTY Define This Class?

Each contender must be a Multi-purpose Vehicle (MPV), also known as ‘minivan’ in North America, and sold with a Category B Certificate of Entitlement (Cat B COE). Pretty straightforward.

Meet The Contenders

Clockwise from top left are the Kia Carnival, Lexus LM, Nissan Serena and Toyota Vellfire.

The Kia Carnival looks futuristic and aggressive simultaneously. With lots of tech and creature comforts on the inside, packaging and ergonomics that are well thought out, loads of practicality and comfort and pretty good fuel economy for a vehicle it’s size, the Carnival is a great package for the family.

The Lexus LM comes into this competition with its luxury credentials ablaze. For those that demand the highest quality while moving six people, the LM goes to town with captain’s chairs and creature comforts that aim to soothe Sir or Ma’am in the middle row, sufficient but understated customization that follows the Japanese style of opulence, and ride comfort that rivals much more expensive brands.

The Nissan Serena e-Power needs no introduction because it’s relatively common sight on our roads – for good reason.

Practicality, check. Packaging, check. Spaciousness, check. It hits all the essentials on the bullseye while offering good comfort, sufficient tech integration and a unique powertrain that’s a stepping-stone to EV-dom without the accompanying range anxiety.

Want a more sporty-looking yet understated MPV? The Toyota Vellfire is right up your alley in this case. With lots of space, practicality, ride comfort and Japanese sophistication, the Vellfire lets you move the family while sipping petrol with Toyota’s famed hybrid powertrain.

Four minivans that mean business, but only one can be crowned king.

ACOTY 2025 – Best Cat B SUV https://www.autoapp.sg/dev/?p=279174 Mon, 09 Dec 2024 10:35:09 +0000 https://www.autoapp.sg/?p=279174 Four Cat B SUVs duel to the end for this category’s crown.

How Does ACOTY Define This Class?

Each contender must be a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) and sold with a Category B Certificate of Entitlement (Cat B COE). At the same time, they should remain relatively affordable Cat B models and not creep into the ‘premium’ territory of pricing. Those SUVs are saved for another category.

Let’s have a look.

Meet The Contenders

Two South Koreans and two Japanese are duelling for the top spot. Clockwise from top left are the Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento, Honda CR-V and Subaru Crosstrek.

The Hyundai Santa Fe comes into this competition with a “hip-to-be-square” attitude. Literally. Its angular physique is a refreshing change, and stands out supremely from the sea of boring SUVs on our streets for this reason.

Featuring a seriously comfortable ride, great fuel economy, an interior that wouldn’t go amiss in a vehicle twice its price, and tech and creature comforts galore, this becomes one seriously compelling family SUV package.

Its cousin, the Kia Sorento looks aggressive head-on and makes others notice it. With plenty of room on the inside, tech integration that’s seamless, handling that’s surprisingly nimble and ride comfort that’s necessary for the family, the South Koreans appear to be nailing the SUV brief with aplomb.

The Honda CR-V needs no introduction. A regular sight on our roads since its inception in 1995, having sold in droves, that alone should speak to how accomplished it is as a family mover.

Sporting a sleek, minimalist look, the CR-V remains understated yet instantly recognisable. Featuring just enough tech on the inside as to not distract, simple but highly functional interior, superb visibility and ergonomics and a comfortable ride, this CR-V soldiers on in the footsteps of its forebearers.

The Subaru Crosstrek e-Boxer is the only SUV available in this grouping with all-wheel drive. With a go-anywhere penchant complete with roof rails for outdoorsy gear, rugged-looking exterior, utilitarian interior and all-round visibility for days, the Crosstrek is easy to drive and live with.

Four went to duel, and only one will emerge victorious.

ACOTY 2024 – Overall Best Value https://www.autoapp.sg/dev/?p=269783 Sun, 10 Dec 2023 18:55:52 +0000 https://autoapp.sg/?p=269783 Four Round 1 winners vie for the title of Overall Best Value.

How Does ACOTY Define This Class?

Cars eligible for this class need to be priced at or under $200,000 with COE. This means only some Round 1 winning Cat A vehicles are eligible for this award.

Meet The Contenders

Toyota Sienta Hybrid

The Toyota Sienta Hybrid feels like more car for the money. Coupled with its excellent fuel economy and the fact that it can transport up to seven people at a go puts it in contention for this award.

BYD Dolphin

The BYD Dolphin Dolphin offers a very compelling value proposition here, and that the polished tech implementation within combined with how energy efficient it is makes it that much more of a contender for this title.

BYD Atto 3

Offering up great efficiency and how it feels the more complete package as an EV SUV, the BYD Atto 3 impressed the judging panel to make an appearance here for this award.

Peugeot 408

One cannot deny how well one will stand out and make a statement while driving the Peugeot 408. That it’s offered at a very compelling price-point puts it that much more in contention for this title.

So who won?

Four compelling Round 1 winners in their respective Cat A categories, but only one can claim this award.

Where the points tally in Round 1 was the final determinant of each category’s winner, here in Round 2, points are taken into consideration but are not the final arbiter of victory.

ACOTY 2024 – Best Luxury SUV https://www.autoapp.sg/dev/?p=268925 Tue, 31 Oct 2023 22:16:00 +0000 https://autoapp.sg/?p=268925 Four luxury SUVs go toe-to-toe to see who emerges victorious.

How Does ACOTY Define This Class?

This is pretty straightforward. Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) that qualify for this category need to be their respective manufacturers’ flagship models and be priced close to the 90th price percentile.

Meet The Contenders

Four luxury SUVs were reviewed this year – three German, and one Italian.

Clockwise from the top left, representing Ingolstadt are the Audi SQ7 and SQ8. Flying the flag for neighbouring Italy is the Maserati Levante GT. And back across the border representing Stuttgart is the Porsche Cayenne.

Starting with the SQ siblings, what differentiates the Audi SQ7 and SQ8 is body style, with the former being a traditional SUV while the latter has a more raked Sportback style, and their respective ability to seat seven and five.

Otherwise, they’re virtually identical underneath. The same 500hp twin-turbo four-litre V8 powers both via Audi’s famed Quattro all-wheel drive system. They both come with adaptive air suspension and are supremely comfortable cruisers. We liked how well-appointed they are and how clean Audi’s design language is, with nothing out of place.

If there’s something the Italians usually execute well, it’s design. And so it is here with the Maserati Levante. Feeling like an Italian business suit, the Levante seats five comfortably and has enough luggage space to cart everyone’s Samsonite suitcases around.

Comfy on a cruise and competent in the bends, there is much to like about this luxury Italian SUV.

When Porsche first introduced the Cayenne, purists went mental. However, time has proven this decision correct. Where the first-generation Cayenne had mechanical off-road gubbins to make it a proper Range Rover rival, the later generations dropped this in favour of sharper streetability.

The Cayenne’s three-chamber air suspension is superbly comfortable while allowing this large SUV to drop smaller sedans in the twisties. It has enough kit on the inside to fulfil the needs of modern-day connectivity. Plus, it’s a Porsche. In the luxury segment, brand cachet is important, and the Cayenne delivers in oodles.

These four luxury SUVs made the work of the judging panel that much more difficult. But there was one clear winner.

The Audi SQ7 won convincingly with 355 points because, although both it and the SQ8 are well-appointed and desirable, it is the more practical of the two while priced more attractively. Despite this being the luxury segment, price and practicality do matter, and the SQ7 represents the better-value buy.

Congratulations to the Audi SQ7 for winning the AutoApp Car of the Year 2024 Best Luxury SUV!

ACOTY 2024 – Best Cat A SUV https://www.autoapp.sg/dev/?p=269139 Mon, 30 Oct 2023 17:51:54 +0000 https://autoapp.sg/?p=269139 Four cool SUVs tangle to decide the Cat A SUV category’s champion.

How Does ACOTY Define This Class?

Every Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) that qualifies for this category needs to be sold with a Category A Certificate of Entitlement (Cat A COE). Easy innit?

Meet The Contenders

Three are German and one is French. Three come from parent group Stellantis and use the same engine. Interesting line-up, this.

Clockwise, from top left – the Opel Mokka, Citroën C5 Aircross, Opel Grandland and BMW X1 sDrive16i.

The first of the Stellantis trio, the Opel Mokka, has stylish looks, practicality and value-for-money going for it. Its compact proportions make it easy to drive and park, and it goes around corners rather well.

The French entrant of the Stellantis trio, the Citroën C5 Aircross, is comfortable, spacious and practical. French quirkiness takes a back seat to a family’s needs in an SUV, and a flat floor in the rear means foot space is not impeded.

The third Stellantis contender, the Opel Grandland, keeps things simple and clean while being practical and spacious. The interior is comfortable and straightforward and everything here is sensible, never out of place.

Then we come to the Bavarian in the group. BMW’s X1 sDrive16i stands out with its technological accoutrements and loud paint colour, but tempers that with practicality, ease of driving and a punchy engine and smooth gearbox.

One is more compact while the other three are more regular-sized. One is more techy while the others are simpler. Decisions, decisions…
