I first encountered the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N during its global launch at the 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed. There it was, shredding tyres and exuding the kind of audacious energy that suggests Hyundai’s engineers had been on a strict diet of adrenaline and madness.

Its fantastically bonkers nature brought much fanfare to both the brand and the car, and I always longed for the time I would be able to wring this beast around a proper track.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 N

Fast forward to 2024, and I found myself in Lombok, Indonesia, piloting this electrified beast on the Mandalika International Circuit.

Happiness doesn’t even begin to describe the sheer joy I’ve experienced in the car.

Redefining Reality

Forget quiet, smooth anonymity. This car dares to emulate an internal combustion engine, complete with synthetic gearshifts and a soundtrack that could fool your ears into believing a roaring petrol engine lurks beneath the bonnet.

But is this automotive sorcery authentic? To throw in a similar case study, when a CVT gearbox simulates gear ratios or a BMW pipes synthetic engine notes through its stereo, is that any less genuine?

Hyundai Ioniq 5 N

Hyundai’s N division takes this concept and supercharges it. Their N Active Sound+ and N e-Shift systems replicate the behaviour of a traditional eight-speed dual-clutch automatic so convincingly that you’ll catch yourself forgetting the absence of a combustion engine.

The execution is so precise it’s almost unsettling. Leave the accelerator pinned in eighth “gear,” and the car bogs down, refusing to accelerate until conditions align. Downshift too eagerly before a corner, and the system denies the change until virtual revs match road speed. It’s an existential wake-up call to driving purists.

Power Play

On paper, the Ioniq 5 N’s dual motors produce 601hp, with an Overboost function (dubbed N Grin Boost or NGB) temporarily unleashing 641hp. That’s good for a century sprint time of 3.0 seconds, and a quarter-mile time of 11.1 seconds at 197km/h.

This is all achieved despite its 2,200 kg heft, showing how the Ioniq 5 N delivers a relentless surge of power that’s matched by pinpoint handling.

Hyundai’s engineers have dubbed the Ioniq 5 N a “Corner Rascal”, and it’s not hard to see why. It pulls 0.96g in some corners, with a torque split system that lets you tailor the power delivery across 11 settings.

Fancy a drift? Engage Torque Kick Drift mode and revel in the kind of tail-happy antics usually reserved for rear-drive sports cars. Heck, you can even toggle between full front-wheel drive (FWD) and rear-wheel drive (RWD) as you navigate a circuit. Absolutely mindblowing.

Big Brakes, Bigger Ideas

Stopping power is courtesy of the largest brakes ever fitted to a Hyundai; 15.7-inch rotors paired with four-piston calipers up front. Add regenerative braking, capable of delivering 0.6g of deceleration on its own, and the result is consistent, fade-free performance even during intense track sessions.

Remarkably, all this complexity feels natural through the pedal, with no hint of artificiality as the system juggles regen and friction braking. We could even do full cooldown laps without ever touching the real brakes.

Theatrics on Demand

If the driving dynamics impress, the theatrics dazzle. The Ioniq 5 N’s synthetic soundscapes come in three flavours: Ignition (mimicking an internal combustion soundtrack), Evolution (a sci-fi-inspired hum), and Supersonic (something akin to a fighter jet).

While the sounds are subjective, the execution is flawless, adding layers of engagement that are otherwise absent in many EVs.

But one creative decision puzzled us: Hyundai modelled the Ioniq 5 N’s synthetic character on the Elantra N. It’s a commendable car, but imagine being granted a blank canvas to emulate any vehicle in history and choosing your neighbour’s Honda Civic.

Why not draw inspiration from a screaming V-10 Formula 1 car or a championship-winning rally monster?

EV Revolution Meets Everyday Usability

Beyond its track antics, the Ioniq 5 N remains a practical EV.

The 84.0kWh battery offers a real-world range of about 300km, and it supports 350kW fast charging, making it viable for both performance enthusiasts and daily drivers.

The cabin is spacious and tech-laden, with enough settings, modes, and adjustments to keep even the most discerning driver entertained. If we could powerslide as a posse of four in the car, rest assured you would have no problems having your family in tow.

Mindblowing Piece of Engineering

Hyundai Ioniq 5 N

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is a car that invites you to suspend disbelief. Yes, it’s an EV. Yes, its theatrics are contrived. But who cares? The result is a thrilling, engaging machine that redefines what electric performance can be.

Purists may scoff at the artifice, but cinema wouldn’t be the same without a little suspension of disbelief, and neither would the Ioniq 5 N.

Singapore is fortunate to be the home of a new Hyundai assembly plant (HMGICS), and we can proudly say most of the Ioniq 5s running around our little island are assembled locally (a term we couldn’t use for the longest time).

But, if you want to embrace the future without abandoning the soul of driving, the bonkers Ioniq 5 N is your car.

It proves that EVs can thrill, excite, and yes, make a bit of “noise” along the way.

On The Ground: Hyundai Mandalika N Track Day https://www.autoapp.sg/dev/?p=279152 Mon, 25 Nov 2024 17:26:44 +0000 https://www.autoapp.sg/?p=279152 What better way to spend an afternoon than hooning the fantastically bonkers Hyundai Ioniq 5 N round a racetrack for an N Track Day?

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N has swiftly captured the imagination of performance car enthusiasts since its unveiling as the N division’s first fully electric model.

With numerous global track tests and comparisons already positioning it favourably against traditional sports cars, the new electric kid on the block has undoubtedly carved a compelling niche for itself.

Only a select few get to properly push the car to its limit on a proper racetrack, so imagine my excitement when I got called to Lombok, Indonesia to have a field day with it.

The Mandalika Playground

Stretching 4.3 kilometres, the Mandalika Circuit, originally designed for MotoGP, served as the ultimate proving ground for the Ioniq 5 N for our N Track Day. Its short straights and technically demanding corners tested the car’s agility, grip, and powertrain dynamics, making it an arena where Hyundai’s engineering could truly shine.

The tropical heat of Lombok also provided an ideal setting to push this high-performance EV to its limits, with sunny weather in Kuta Mandalika adding a touch of serendipity to the occasion.

Before we took to the track, a comprehensive briefing on the car and circuit prepared us for the session ahead.

Our instructors detailed the optimal racing lines and braking points while introducing the Ioniq 5 N’s features, including N Pedal, N Active Sound+, N Torque Distribution, and N e-Shift – all designed to enhance the driving experience and convert sceptics of electric performance cars.

Born to Corner, Built to Thrill

Developed under Hyundai N’s guiding philosophy – Corner Rascal, Racetrack Capability, and Everyday Sportscar – the Ioniq 5 N is engineered for extreme track versatility.

Whether carving through tight bends or cruising comfortably on a cooldown lap, this car is designed to evoke the same excitement as its petrol-powered predecessors.

On ignition, we activated N Active Sound+, which emulates the roar of an internal combustion engine, adding a visceral edge to the otherwise silent electric drivetrain. Coupled with N e-Shift, which simulates artificial but surprisingly compelling gear changes, the car delivers a uniquely engaging driving experience that bridges the gap between the future and nostalgia.

Power delivery from the twin electric motors is nothing short of ferocious, with a baseline output of 600hp and 740Nm of torque.

Activate the N Grin Boost or lovingly dubbed NGB button, and these figures jump to 631hp and 770Nm, propelling the car from corners with a force that firmly cements you into the semi-bucket seats.

Hitting 200km/h on Mandalika’s 723-metre pit straight felt effortless.

Handling Precision Meets Comfort

Hyundai Ioniq 5 N N Track Day

Despite its substantial weight of over 2.2 tonnes, the Ioniq 5 N handles spirited driving with surprising poise.

Hard braking into the first corner revealed the car’s robust setup, featuring high-spec disc brakes and callipers paired with a finely tuned chassis and suspension system.

The steering is precise, making rapid transitions through Mandalika’s technical corners (particularly turns 2, 3 and 16) enjoyable and controlled.

The innovative N Pedal feature adds another dimension to the driving experience. Acting as a regenerative brake, it stabilises the car when entering corners, delivering a balanced and seamless transition that enhances confidence during sharp manoeuvres.

Click it into its most powerful “Stage 3” regen mode, and I even could do a full lap without touching the brakes of the car. Ingenious.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 N N Track Day

For added fun, we switched N Active Sound+ to its Supersonic mode, which mimics the sound of a jet engine.

Throw in some pops, bangs, and sonic booms during gear shifts, and the drive turned into a symphony of speed and excitement.

Nothing Else Comes Close

Hyundai Ioniq 5 N N Track Day

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is without a doubt a marvellous product of insane engineering.

Combining cutting-edge electric technology with features that deliver genuine driving pleasure, it has successfully addressed the concerns of petrolheads who doubted the fun factor of EVs.

This is a car that delivers on multiple fronts, and I can guarantee that you’ll break out a smile as soon as you get behind the wheel.

For anyone ready to embrace the future of performance motoring, the Ioniq 5 N sets a new benchmark, one grin-inducing lap at a time.

Hyundai Unveils Ioniq 5 ‘NPX1’ Concept at Tokyo Auto Salon https://www.autoapp.sg/dev/?p=271530 Wed, 31 Jan 2024 06:03:11 +0000 https://autoapp.sg/?p=271530 This bonkers EV will be launched this year, and Hyundai is planning to extend the kit for use on other future N products.

If the Ioniq 5 N wasn’t crazy enough for you, the engineers at Hyundai have heard your plea, and have now introduced the Ioniq 5 N NPX1. Debuting at the 2024 Tokyo Auto Salon, it’s a transformation that turns the Ioniq 5 N into a tech marvel straight out of a futuristic movie.

Draped in a sleek matte black with striking dark teal highlights, the Ioniq 5 N NPX1 is extremely striking at first glance. The front end sports a revamped bumper, less cluttered yet more impactful, crowned by a massive front splitter that seems to draw inspiration from a sci-fi titan.

The side profile gets an equally impressive treatment, with redesigned side skirts and hybrid carbon wheels that are lighter and sportier than ever. And then there’s the rear – a grand display of aggression with a colossal four-section rear splitter that’s impossible to miss.

The Ioniq 5 N NPX1 packs a serious punch in performance enhancements too. Think lower springs for a more grounded stance, high-performance brake pads for that extra stopping power, and a cabin lavished in Alcantara, complete with racing bucket seats for that authentic sporty feel.

Hyundai isn’t stopping at physical modifications. Joon Park, the Vice President of N Brand Management, reveals plans for software customisation, including OTA updates for sound and vehicle calibration. It’s a bold step towards a new realm of EV customisation.

While the exact price tag is yet to be revealed, expect a significant jump from the Ioniq 5 N’s initial asking price.

Hyundai is set to roll out these upgrades for customers this year too, with plans to expand across the entire ‘N’ range.
