The blame no longer rests on Valtteri Bottas’s Sauber running over Alex Albon’s discarded mirror. Instead, the culprit remains elusive.

The Qatar GP was a tyre punisher. The high-speed corners and relentless forces at Losail made the front left tyres the most stressed component on the grid. It was here that both Hamilton and Sainz fell victim, their front left tyres giving up the ghost within moments of each other.

Initially, all eyes turned to Albon’s wayward mirror, shattered into shards by Bottas and strewn across the start-finish straight. But as more data poured in, it became evident that the tyres were already deflating before Bottas hit the debris.

Simone Berra, Pirelli F1’s chief engineer, shared insights into the ongoing investigation. Speaking candidly, he explained that telemetry showed pressure loss occurring well before the tyres encountered the suspected debris.

“Looking at the telemetry data, we noticed the pressure loss happened earlier in the lap,” said Berra. “The punctures occurred at other points on the circuit, perhaps due to debris elsewhere or other reasons.”

The tyres, freshly returned to the Pirelli laboratory in Milan, are undergoing rigorous tests. The team is examining everything from cross-sectional cuts to sidewall integrity, fatigue resistance, and even residual life.

“By the end of next week, or perhaps two weeks, we expect to have a comprehensive analysis,” Berra added, highlighting the meticulous nature of the process.

So what exactly caused these failures? The Losail circuit, known for its demanding kerbs, could be a suspect. Or, perhaps, stray debris elsewhere on the track played a role.

Berra acknowledged the stakes: “It’s important for the teams and for us to understand if it was debris or not. We’re delving deep into the details.”

Mercedes, too, has been investigating. Andrew Shovlin, the team’s trackside engineering director, revealed that video evidence and live tyre pressure data suggest a different narrative.

Teams, pushing tyres to their absolute limit due to minimal degradation, skirted close to 100% wear levels, and are essentially rolling the dice on durability.

“We can see when the mirror was shattered, but Lewis’s pressure started dropping before Valtteri hit the debris,” Shovlin noted. “It’s unlikely to be a debris puncture, though we can’t rule out other track debris entirely.”

Formula 1 2024 Qatar Grand Prix Recap https://www.autoapp.sg/dev/?p=279583 Sat, 07 Dec 2024 17:06:07 +0000 https://www.autoapp.sg/?p=279583 Max Verstappen triumphs amid drama in Qatar Grand Prix.

Max Verstappen once again showcased why he’s the reigning champion, clinching victory in an exhilarating Qatar Grand Prix. Three Safety Car appearances, a nail-biting tussle at the front, and penalties that upended the order.

Verstappen might have started from second after a penalty bumped him off pole, but the Dutchman was in no mood to play second fiddle. At Turn 1, he muscled his way past George Russell and Lando Norris, setting the tone for a chaotic but commanding drive to the finish.

The Safety Car was deployed almost immediately following a collision between Franco Colapinto, Esteban Ocon, and Nico Hulkenberg, a tangle that left two cars out and one beached in the gravel.

With three Safety Car interruptions, the race felt like a blend of strategy chess and sprint racing. Each restart was a test of nerve, and Norris gave Verstappen a real run for his money during the second one, inching dangerously close to the world champion.

Lando’s day, however, took a turn for the worse. A 10-second stop/go penalty for failing to slow under yellow flags dashed his podium hopes and sent him tumbling down the order. It was a bitter pill to swallow for the Briton, who had looked poised for a strong result.

While Verstappen sailed to victory, the fight behind him delivered its own brand of excitement. Charles Leclerc crossed the line in second, six seconds adrift. Meanwhile, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri rounded off the podium in third.

Mercedes’ George Russell finished fourth, the sole bright spot for the Silver Arrows after a punishing day for his teammate, Lewis Hamilton. Alpine’s Pierre Gasly grabbed a solid fifth, fending off Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, who had to battle back from an earlier puncture.

Fernando Alonso bagged seventh for Aston Martin, while Zhou Guanyu delivered a stellar performance for Kick Sauber, scoring their long-awaited first points of the season with an eighth-place finish. It was a result that not only delighted the team but also earned Zhou the coveted Driver of the Day accolade.

Kevin Magnussen added to Haas’s tally with ninth, while Norris salvaged a solitary point in 10th after his penalty-induced recovery drive.

Not everyone left Qatar smiling, though. Valtteri Bottas narrowly missed out on points in 11th, while Lewis Hamilton, weighed down by two penalties, finished a dispirited 12th. Red Bull’s Sergio Perez and Haas’s Nico Hulkenberg were among the retirees, each falling victim to spins that ended their races prematurely.

Elsewhere, Lance Stroll’s race ended in heartbreak following contact with Alex Albon on the opening lap. The same could be said for Colapinto and Ocon, whose Qatar Grand Prix ended before it even began.
