Škoda Octavia Combi RS 2.0 TSI Review – Perfection https://www.autoapp.sg/dev/?p=269417 Sat, 04 Nov 2023 02:53:33 +0000 https://autoapp.sg/?p=269417 We had the privilege of driving this Octavia Combi RS through some lovely roads in Kuantan.

I start all my wagon reviews by saying this: “If you’ve been reading our articles for some time now, you’d know that I’m a wagon fan.” Well, that’s because I really am, and I prefer it that you know from the very beginning that I’m going to be biased. Be it Audi’s range of dashing Avant’s, BMW’s Touring series, or Mercedes and Volvo’s Estates, just give me a wagon and all will be well.

What other body style gives you both car-like driving dynamics and all the practicality a car owner could possibly need? None. Nada. Only a wagon can.

Now if you put a nice, potent engine into a wagon and tweak the suspension, brakes and wheels to cope with the added power, you’ve got something even more magical. That’s what Škoda has done with the Octavia. The once liftback-only RS variant now comes in a Combi form – which is Škoda speak for a station wagon.

We had the privilege of driving this Octavia Combi RS through some lovely roads in Kuantan, Malaysia and my word, did it impress. What made it even more special was the fact that I once owned an Octavia Combi as well, in a shade of grey too, so this was a road trip down memory lane of sorts.

First, the similar bits to the RS liftback.

Well, a lot of it is the same as the lovely red RS we drove recently. The car is 15 mm lower than the standard Octavia, has uprated brakes and sports some cool-looking 19-inch wheels. Power is delivered via a 2.0-litre TSI engine that whips out 241bhp and 370Nm of torque.

The interior panels, steering wheel, seats and features are also similar, with the exception of a very important addition – a panoramic sunroof. I’m a sucker for these and seeing it fitted on the Combi got me nodding with approval.

Key exterior visual styling from the front to the side is also identical to the liftback. But the sides are where the similarities end. The Combi, being a station wagon, cuts a sportier and adventurous profile. The rear is stout without being bulky and the three-quarter angle just exudes a sleek-looking form.

I’d dare say, in some angles, it even looks like an Audi RS4, sans the flared body arches.

The added space is a welcomed feature too, not that the liftback version was lacking in any. In fact, the liftback has a larger opening access area with the rear glass panel also raising up to create a gaping boot. But the Combi does have a higher rear roof line and that frees up 640 litres of boot space or 1,700 litres with the rear seats folded down.

So I said it looks like an RS4, but does it drive like one? Well, not quite. Perhaps that’s because the RS4 does have 200 bhp more and costs double the price. But while it’s not ballistic like the Audi, it’s no slouch either. The Combi RS will reach 100 km/h from standstill in 6.7 seconds, and the power is accessible from pretty much across the rev range.

Through the sweeping Malaysian B-roads, the RS performed admirably as well, taking in the rough and tough roads, soaking up the bumps and tacking the undulated surfaces in an extremely composed manner.

If there was one complaint I had, it would have been the noise insulation or lack of it. This seemed to create quite a din when driving across 70% of the roads in Malaysia, whether I was in the liftback or the Combi. The Kodiaq RS we drove had no such issue.

This could be perhaps sorted with some added soundproofing and quieter tyres. Other than that, I really have nothing else to gripe about the car. To me, it’s the perfect ride. If only COE was lower, I would be one to sign on the dotted line.

First Drive – Škoda Enyaq https://www.autoapp.sg/dev/?p=265261 Tue, 04 Jul 2023 17:24:22 +0000 https://autoapp.sg/?p=265261 The Škoda Enyaq isn’t just a re-skinned Volkswagen ID.4; it’s much more than that.

If you’ve read our Volkswagen ID.4 first drive article, I won’t blame you for thinking that Škoda’s first dedicated EV, the Enyaq, is nothing more than a Volkswagen ID.4 in a different suit.

And you’re not wrong either. Both are built on Volkswagen’s MEB (Modular Electric Drive Matrix) platform and use the exact same electric powertrain. Think of it as more of non-identical twins kinda deal.

But, that’s where the similarity ends. Despite being identical underneath, Škoda has taken liberty and done its own unique spin on the model. In some areas, I dare say it even trumps its German sibling.

At first glance, you might mistake the Enyaq for another Škoda model, with its unmistakable Škoda resemblance peeking through the “camouflage” wrap. The familiar headlights, grille, and taillights are all traits that keep it quintessentially Czech.

Where it differs is the inside, where the Enyaq’s cabin is radically different from Škoda’s current range.

Personally, I would have liked a slightly larger instrument cluster, but it gives the dashboard a cleaner look overall. A significantly larger 13-inch touchscreen infotainment screen now dominates the middle, and many of the buttons and switches you’ve come to know and love from the latest Škoda models also find their home in the Enyaq.

Where the Enyaq shines is its use of soft materials throughout the cabin. The suede/fabric trim adorning the dashboard and door cards elevates the Enyaq’s ambiance to a more luxurious level compared to the predominantly hard plastic interior of the Volkswagen ID.4.

Rear passengers get a flat floor, and with a generous 2,765mm wheelbase, ample legroom is available, ensuring no awkward leg jousting from the middle occupant. If you exclude the middle guy, a handy removable floor tray adds extra cubby slots.

The Enyaq also boasts 585 litres of boot space, expandable to a capacious 1,710 litres with the backrests folded.

Underneath the hood, or rather, beneath the electric vehicle’s sleek exterior, both the Enyaq and ID.4 share the same powertrain. An electric motor mounted on the rear axle generates 201bhp (150kW) and a substantial 310Nm of torque. Fueling this electrifying performance is a 77kWh (nett) lithium-ion battery, providing a commendable 532km of driving range, as Škoda claims.

The Enyaq’s power delivery is smooth and effortless, allowing it to rock the century sprint in a decent 8.7 seconds. While not necessarily breaking records for the speed enthusiasts among us, it’s the ideal runabout for those seeking a spirited yet gentle driving experience.

Although, the Enyaq’s braking system does take some time to get used to, requiring a deeper pedal press before you feel the pads bite. Ride comfort could also be improved in some areas. Whilst not in any dire circumstance, harsh jolts in the road can send feedback into the cabin.

Like what you see? The Škoda Enyaq is set to arrive in Q1 2024, and it’s likely to carry a more affordable price tag than its sister, the ID.4. With both models coexisting, the Enyaq might just prove to be the more compelling choice for customers, barring any notable differences in specifications.

Road Tripping – Volkswagen Group Singapore Desaru Cat-A Cruise https://www.autoapp.sg/dev/?p=265117 Mon, 26 Jun 2023 18:36:22 +0000 https://autoapp.sg/?p=265117 What happens when you bring an array of Cat A-friendly vehicles to tackle some Malaysia B-roads? You get absolute bliss.

Category A COE cars are all the rage these days in Singapore. With soaring petrol prices and astronomical COE premiums, these wallet-friendly city runabouts are just the sort of thing a budget-conscious buyer wants – practical, fuel-efficient, and versatile.

For those of you reading outside of Singapore, here’s how we classify Cat A vehicles being registered here:

  • Non-fully electric cars with engines up to 1,600cc and Maximum Power Output up to 97kW (130bhp).
  • Fully electric cars with Maximum Power Output of up to 110kW (147bhp).

However, as we can see from the figures above, in traditional cases owning a Cat A vehicle means sacrificing performance and oftentimes driving fun in exchange for a cheaper set of wheels.

But, with the advent and advancement in new engine technology alongside innovations like electrical assistance, engine capacity is no longer the defacto indicator of performance.

So that begs the question, can Cat A cars be any fun? Well, to find out, I went on a road trip with Volkswagen Group Singapore (VGS) to Desaru, in order to answer this with four wheels and a steering wheel.

What four wheels you might ask? VGS has very kindly offered their existing range of Category A Volkswagen and Škoda cars. Despite our end goal being Desaru, the gang opted to travel in a 500km U-shaped route instead, savouring some of Malaysia’s best B-roads along the way.

The cars accompanying us on this journey included the Volkswagen Golf 1.5 eTSI (Life and Life Plus), Volkswagen T-Cross 1.0TSI, Škoda Scala 1.0TSI Monte Carlo and the Škoda Octavia 1.0TSI. Nothing over 1.5 litres of engine block goodness.

My group were assigned to the Škoda Octavia first, our vessel to cross into Malaysian tarmac. Once the speed limits turned into suggestions, I placed my foot down and started hunting.

Yes, it might only have a 1.0-litre 3-pot heart, but having access to its 200Nm of torque at low RPMs coupled with mild-hybrid assistance meant that it could hold its own both on the straights and the corners. It could easily keep up with its Octavia RS sibling driven by the support crew, bar brief moments of harsh acceleration.

To keep costs down, Škoda opted for a torsion rear beam instead of the usual multi-link setup. I loved this setup, as it makes the car more predictable around corners. The car feels settled even at speed, and any bouts of oversteer can be mitigated as easily as letting your foot off the throttle.

Plus, you get to do that in a spacious and practical family sedan with tons of room. The Octavia has always been dear to my heart, and this road trip bolstered additional gratification towards it.

After a spot of brunch at Yong Peng’s famous Sunroast, we were on the road again – this time in the Volkswagen Golf Life. The new Life variants are meant to distinguish the Cat A models from their more powerful brethren. With the same engine, the boffins at Volkswagen have managed to detune the 1.5-litre engine to make it fall nicely under Cat A.

Externally and internally, it’s business as usual from the regular Cat B Mk 8 Golf. But, what lies in its engine bay is what truly matters, and boy does this Golf live up to its famed reputation.

With the same torsion beam setup as most of the other cars on this trip, the Golf was effortlessly dancing in the bends. It just so happens I was in the Golf for a particularly twisty bit of road, and it couldn’t have been a better combination.

Keeping up momentum in the corners, any understeer sensations were quickly sorted out as the Golf soldiered on, and shifting through its 7-speed DSG gearbox whilst keeping its revs high was riveting. All of this, even as it started to pour and visibility became limited.

Our little chihuahua gave us a blast all to way to Jemaluang Emerald Lake, and we were sad to part ways with it at Jason’s Bay Beach.

But, this meant we could hop into another ride, and this time it was the biggest of the group – the Volkswagen T-Cross. Now, you take one look at these cars and probably think to yourself, “How can the T-Cross keep up with this pack?”

Yes, I will admit the T-Cross can be a little more tricky to wrestle in the corners, with its taller stature and waftiness. But, despite its SUV proportions, it could just as easily keep up on the highway bits and back roads. It was also arguably the most comfortable of the bunch as well, with tall cabin headroom and ample leg space for toe wiggling.

Turning in for the night, I awoke bright and early for our return journey to Singapore, and the Škoda Scala was there to greet me for the ride home.

This was the Monte Carlo edition of the Scala, fitted with a bunch of extra trinkets like 18-inch alloys, soft bucket seats and a panoramic moonroof. There weren’t many B-roads left to enjoy on the return leg, but the Scala was extremely competent blasting down the highway at legal speeds. Plus, I don’t know about you, but the Scala looks gorgeous in that shade of red.

Our final car swap saw us crossing the border back into Singapore in the Volkswagen Golf Life Plus. Much like its aforementioned Golf Life sibling, it has all of the charms of the Golf, but is now packaged in a bite-sized wallet-friendly form. Plus, with the Life Plus, you get the added advantage of 3-zone HVAC and cooler rims on the outside.

Overall, this was obviously a fun-filled trip, but it was mainly fun because of these Cat A gems. These cars invoke a unique charm behind the wheel and beckon you to just keep driving whilst savouring every last bit of tarmac.

These are not just machines; they’re companions. Companions that can munch up the miles and take you to your next destination, with a big grin plastered on your face.

It’s more fun driving a slow car fast than a fast car slow, right? Just like getaway cars.

Big shoutout to Volkswagen Group Singapore for making this trip possible!

Škoda Launches Exciting New Enyaq iV RS EV https://www.autoapp.sg/dev/?p=261412 Thu, 10 Nov 2022 10:05:52 +0000 https://autoapp.sg/?p=261412 Škoda is expanding its RS family to include another EV model, a dual-motor high-performance version of its electric Enyaq iV SUV.

Škoda is expanding its RS family to include another EV model. It’s (creatively) dubbed the Enyaq iV RS, and just like its coupe sibling, the Czech carmaker has opted for a dual motor all-wheel drive setup with a total power output of 220 kW (299 PS) and 460 Nm of instant torque.

Interestingly enough, this makes both RS versions of the Enyaq iV family the most powerful models currently in Škoda’s lineup.

Sporty Goodness

In true Skoda RS fashion, the Enyaq RS has been bestowed RS-specific design elements, including large 20 or 21-inch alloy rims. Sports suspension drops the overall height by 15mm, giving it a more aggressive stance. Other RS-specific trinkets include gloss black finishes on various parts of the car. Skoda’s ‘Crystal Face’ grille makes yet another appearance, consisting of 131 LEDs embedded into the grille, flanked by Matrix LED headlights.

In case you want everyone to know you’re driving the top rung of the Skoda family, RS badges are generously adorned all over the car. To top it off, an RS-exclusive Mamba Green colour will also be offered.

The RS goodies continue on the inside, with dashboard and door trims covered in a carbon-fibre look, complementing aluminium pedals. Suede microfibre sports seats come as standard and feature an embroidered RS logo. Owners are also given a leather-wrapped steering wheel, an upgrade exclusive to the RS-trim model.

With technology being the main focus of the new model, Škoda assures that the Enyaq’s software will always be up to date thanks to a permanent online connection via an integrated eSIM, allowing drivers to download updates over the air. The Internet connection can support numerous functions too, including remote controls for battery charging, and real-time traffic updates.

Besides its sporty look and dynamic handling, the Enyaq RS offers a generous amount of space for up to five people. 585 litres of boot space are available, which can be expanded up to 1,710 litres by folding down the rear seats.

RS Blood

The Škoda Enyaq iV RS is based on the Volkswagen Group’s Modular Electrification (MEB) platform. Benefitting from a dual motor all-wheel drive system, the car churns out 220 kW and a 460Nm of torque. Boasting a decent top speed of 180 km/h, it is 20 km/h faster than regular ENYAQ iV models and can clock the century sprint in 6.5 seconds.

Its 82 kWh battery, high energy efficiency and drag coefficient of 0.265 give the model a maximum range of over 500 kilometres (WLTP). Thanks to a maximum charging power of 135 kW, the ENYAQ RS’s lithium-ion high-voltage battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in just 36 minutes at fast-charging stations.

A new function, dubbed ‘Plug & Charge’, makes charging seamless at suitable charging points stored in the Skoda PowerPass app. An owner would just need to connect the charging cable, and the vehicle is automatically identified at the charging point. The subsequent charging session is then billed automatically.

The model has seen major success in Europe since its inception in 2021. Hopefully, we will be able to catch a glimpse of this on our roads very soon.
