A place where petrolheads gather in droves, to check out the latest trends in customisation, performance tuning, and automotive innovation.

This year, the 43rd edition of Tokyo Auto Salon returned to Makuhari Messe, bringing together 389 exhibitors and an eye-watering 857 vehicles on display.

Over the course of three days, the show welcomed 258,406 attendees, setting a new benchmark for one of the world’s most revered tuning exhibitions.

Numbers aside, Tokyo Auto Salon is proof that the custom car scene is still alive and thriving, fuelled by innovation, creativity, and a deep passion for automobiles.

Tokyo Auto Salon has always been a barometer for the global aftermarket industry, and this year was no different.

From widebody wonders to EV conversions, hardcore track machines to VIP sedans dripping in luxury, every corner of the show floor had something to capture the imagination.

One trend stood out: performance electrification is now a movement. Major tuners showcased hybrid and electric performance builds, proving that EVs are just as modifiable, thrilling, and downright rebellious as their petrol-powered counterparts.

Meanwhile, traditional JDM icons made a strong comeback, with modernised takes on classic favourites drawing crowds. And, of course, the supercar and hypercar scene continued to push the boundaries of excess, with some of the wildest liveries and aero kits we’ve ever seen.

One of the most talked-about themes was Adaptive aerodynamics. This year, exhibitors showcased active aero solutions that adjust dynamically based on driving conditions. The kind of stuff you’d usually see in motorsport is now making its way into street builds.

The buzz around drift culture was undeniable, with live drift showcases happening just outside the venue.

Watching high-horsepower machines slide effortlessly at impossible angles, accompanied by the unmistakable scent of burning rubber, was an experience in itself.

Meanwhile, inside, interactive booths allowed visitors to experience the latest automotive technology firsthand.

From virtual simulators replicating real-world racing dynamics to AI-assisted tuning software, the future of car modification is more digital than ever.

And of course, Tokyo Auto Salon wouldn’t be complete without celebrity appearances. This year, top-tier racing drivers, professional drifters, and automotive influencers were present, sharing their insights, stories, and, of course, signing endless posters for die-hard fans.

In a world where EVs, AI, and automation are reshaping the industry, TAS 2025 proved that the aftermarket scene will always find a way to push the boundaries of innovation while keeping the passion alive.

And with Tokyo Auto Salon 2026 already confirmed for 9-11 January 2026, one thing is certain: the custom car world is only getting started.

Until next year, TAS. Keep the spirit of tuning alive.

Hyundai Unveils Ioniq 5 ‘NPX1’ Concept at Tokyo Auto Salon https://www.autoapp.sg/dev/?p=271530 Wed, 31 Jan 2024 06:03:11 +0000 https://autoapp.sg/?p=271530 This bonkers EV will be launched this year, and Hyundai is planning to extend the kit for use on other future N products.

If the Ioniq 5 N wasn’t crazy enough for you, the engineers at Hyundai have heard your plea, and have now introduced the Ioniq 5 N NPX1. Debuting at the 2024 Tokyo Auto Salon, it’s a transformation that turns the Ioniq 5 N into a tech marvel straight out of a futuristic movie.

Draped in a sleek matte black with striking dark teal highlights, the Ioniq 5 N NPX1 is extremely striking at first glance. The front end sports a revamped bumper, less cluttered yet more impactful, crowned by a massive front splitter that seems to draw inspiration from a sci-fi titan.

The side profile gets an equally impressive treatment, with redesigned side skirts and hybrid carbon wheels that are lighter and sportier than ever. And then there’s the rear – a grand display of aggression with a colossal four-section rear splitter that’s impossible to miss.

The Ioniq 5 N NPX1 packs a serious punch in performance enhancements too. Think lower springs for a more grounded stance, high-performance brake pads for that extra stopping power, and a cabin lavished in Alcantara, complete with racing bucket seats for that authentic sporty feel.

Hyundai isn’t stopping at physical modifications. Joon Park, the Vice President of N Brand Management, reveals plans for software customisation, including OTA updates for sound and vehicle calibration. It’s a bold step towards a new realm of EV customisation.

While the exact price tag is yet to be revealed, expect a significant jump from the Ioniq 5 N’s initial asking price.

Hyundai is set to roll out these upgrades for customers this year too, with plans to expand across the entire ‘N’ range.

Evolved GR Yaris Makes World Premiere https://www.autoapp.sg/dev/?p=271259 Wed, 24 Jan 2024 10:07:33 +0000 https://autoapp.sg/?p=271259 The rally-bred Toyota GR Yaris hot hatch gets an extra dose of power and more race goodies.

Toyota has taken its already scorching GR Yaris and turned up the heat. This little dynamo, which has already found its way into the hearts of hot hatch aficionados, is back from the workshop with some serious tweaks.

Revealed at Tokyo Auto Salon 2024, the new turbocharged 1.6-litre 3-cylinder engine is back, but it’s not just business as usual.

This powerhouse now churns out 276bhp (up from 257) and boasts a torque of 390Nm. It’s all in the meticulous engineering: sturdier valve material, beefier fuel injection pressure, and featherlight pistons designed to withstand the wear and tear of high-octane driving.

It’s all been put through the wringer in the Japan Rally Championship, so you know it’s tough as nails.

Toyota didn’t just stop under the hood. The GR Yaris’s structure has been reinforced for extra rigidity. The suspension system has been fine-tuned for the rough and tumble of the racetrack, promising a ride that’s both tough and smooth.

An optional eight-speed automatic gearbox straight from Gazoo Racing is also on offer. It’s a race-inspired autobox that even outperformed the six-speed manual in test laps. With a smart torque control system and a wealth of heat-resistant material, it’s designed to read the driver’s style and adapt accordingly.

Inside the GR Yaris, everything is where you need it, especially when you’re mid-rally. The cockpit’s been reimagined for the driver, with a lower seat and a dropped instrument panel for an unobstructed view of what lies ahead.

The redesigned interior ensures everything from the intercooler spray to the traction control is within easy reach.

The GR Yaris comes with three driving modes: Normal, Eco (who needs this?), and Sport. In the auto, these modes even adjust the shift behaviour. Plus, the AWD system offers three more settings: Normal, Sport, and Track.

Expect the latest in safety, sat-nav, and a digital key. The auto versions boast a swankier spec, including forged wheels and a banging JBL sound system. Visually, the GR Yaris sports a new grille, revamped rear lights, and aerodynamic tweaks for stability and reduced drag.

Keep your eyes peeled for two special editions, each celebrating one of Toyota’s world rally champions. The Sebastien Ogier Special Edition and Kalle Rovanpera Special Edition will debut at the Monte Carlo Rally.

The GT-R is back! 2024 Nissan GT-R Unveiled With Two Special Editions https://www.autoapp.sg/dev/?p=262395 Sat, 14 Jan 2023 18:51:31 +0000 https://autoapp.sg/?p=262395 The R35 GT-R doesn’t seem to want to retire, and Nissan proudly unveiled their latest 2024 edition to the world at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2023.

It’s been 16 years since the Nissan R35 GT-R made its debut back in 2007. Not many cars survive that long of a production run, but the boffins at Nissan surprised the world again with the launch of the 2024 GT-R model year, after revealing earlier in 2022 that the R35 GT-R will be ending production.

Ageing chassis infrastructure did not stop engineers from chucking both mechanical and cosmetic improvements to the GT-R. For starters, the biggest reaction from the crowd at its launch was the inclusion of new daytime running lights (DRLs), making the GT-R’s front fascia look more futuristic.

Whether you love or hate it, it’s here to stay, along with a revised grille design and a new front splitter. A new spoiler and rear bumper design are spotted too, which Nissan claims help with the car’s overall aerodynamics.

Nissan will also make you stand out from the crowd with special edition paints. Buy the Premium Edition T-Spec and you can opt for either Millennium Jade or Midnight Purple. These are two of the GT-R’s most iconic colours. Spring for the NISMO Special Edition, and customers can get a NISMO-exclusive Stealth Grey paint option.

Nothing much has changed under the hood, with the 2024 GT-R churning out 570 bhp and 637 Nm of torque derived from the same handbuilt twin-turbo VR38DETT engine. Like all models before it, power is sent to all four wheels, providing the car with its signature yet deadly launch control.

Nissan launched the 2024 GT-R with two trim options. The demure version with the millennium jade paint is aptly called the Premium Edition T-Spec. It comes standard with a more robust suspension setup and carbon disc brakes for greater performance.

But, what’s more appetising is the new track-focused NISMO Special Edition. The car is decked out from top to bottom in flashy carbon fibre bits, Recaro bucket seats, and crucially more durable mechanical limited-slip differential.

With its NISMO tune, the special edition’s power figures are raised to 600 bhp and 652 Nm of torque.

Excited to get your hands on one? Well, both variants of the new GT-R will go on sale later this year. Prices are unknown at the time of writing.
