Motul And McLaren Racing Expand Technical Partnership Across F1 And WEC

Motul is deepening its technical partnership with McLaren Racing, supplying bespoke lubricants for its Formula 1 machinery today and its upcoming World Endurance Championship Hypercar from 2027.

Motul has supplied lubricant for the gearbox and differential of McLaren’s MCL40 since the start of the 2026 Formula 1 season.

Motul’s research and development teams in France and Japan spent nine months working with McLaren Racing to create the bespoke 2714E gear oil. More than 40 tests were carried out, covering everything from tribology to material compatibility and final validation at the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking.

“Formula 1 provides an exceptional environment to refine our technologies, where precision, performance and engineering excellence come together at the highest level,” said Carlo Savoca, Chief Marketing Officer of Motul Asia Pacific.

“Every kilometre on track provides valuable technical insights that allow our teams to explore new possibilities in lubricant performance.”

The partnership will expand further in 2027 when McLaren enters the FIA World Endurance Championship’s Hypercar category.

Motul will supply engine and transmission lubricants for the programme, while also providing technical support through its Racing Lab, a mobile laboratory capable of analysing fluid samples for wear, oxidation, thermal stability and fuel dilution.

Motul’s relationship with the 24 Hours of Le Mans stretches back to 1954, while McLaren famously won the race on its first attempt in 1995. Now, more than three decades later, McLaren is preparing to return to the top class of endurance racing.
