Valtteri Bottas And Zhou Guanyu Exit Kicks Sauber, Gabriel Bortoleto Joins Ranks

The winds of change are sweeping through Sauber as they prepare for the next chapter in their Formula 1 journey, now under the Audi banner.

Brazilian talent Gabriel Bortoleto, the reigning Formula 3 champion and current Formula 2 frontrunner, has signed a multi-year deal to race for the team in 2025, replacing outgoing drivers Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu.

Teaming up with Nico Hülkenberg, the 20-year-old marks the arrival of a fresh, ambitious face in Formula 1. Bortoleto’s entry into Formula 1 signals a significant shift for Sauber/Audi as they build towards their future as a works team in 2026.

His stellar performances in junior categories, including two victories and multiple podium finishes in this year’s F2 championship, have cemented his reputation as one of motorsport’s brightest prospects.

Currently managed by Fernando Alonso’s A14 program and a former member of the McLaren Driver Development programme, Bortoleto is no stranger to top-tier motorsport ecosystems.

“This is one of the most exciting projects in motorsport, if not in all of sports,” said Bortoleto. “Joining a team that combines the rich motorsport history of Sauber and Audi is a true honour. Beyond simply being a member, I aim to grow with this ambitious project and reach the pinnacle of motorsport.”

With Nico Hülkenberg providing a wealth of experience, the addition of Bortoleto brings a fresh perspective and youthful energy to the team.

Sauber’s COO and CTO, Mattia Binotto, spoke highly of the pairing, “Nico and Gabriel represent the ideal combination of experience and youth, positioning us strongly for the future. Gabriel’s performance in junior categories proves that he has what it takes to be a winning driver, and we are thrilled to welcome him to our team.”

This strategic move aligns with Audi’s vision for Formula 1, with Sauber Chairman Gernot Dollner emphasising the importance of investing in young talent.

“We are currently witnessing a generational shift in Formula One, with young drivers immediately making an impact. By signing Gabriel Bortoleto, we have secured one of these top talents. His signing underscores Audi’s long-term strategy and commitment to Formula 1,” he mentioned.

The departure of Bottas and Zhou marks the end of a challenging era for Sauber. Despite their best efforts, the team struggled to secure points this season, prompting a fresh start.

Bottas is rumoured to be pursuing a reserve role with Mercedes, while Zhou remains optimistic about his future in motorsport.

Reflecting on his journey, Zhou said, “I am grateful to the team for giving me a chance in Formula One. This is not an easy sport for rookies, but the team has allowed me to grow so much over these three years.”

Bortoleto’s debut will make him the first full-time Brazilian driver in Formula 1 since Felipe Massa’s retirement in 2017. His arrival comes at a time when Brazil eagerly awaits the resurgence of its motorsport legacy.

Pietro Fittipaldi’s brief appearance as a stand-in for Romain Grosjean in 2020 was the last time the Brazilian flag was seen on the grid.
