Xiaomi Sets World’s First Official Autonomous Driving Lap At The Nürburgring

Xiaomi YU7 GT

Xiaomi has become the first manufacturer to complete an officially certified autonomous driving lap of the Nürburgring Nordschleife, using a Xiaomi YU7 GT.

For decades, the Nürburgring Nordschleife has been the ultimate test of both man and machine.

The 20.8-kilometre circuit is unforgiving. Its 73 corners, dramatic elevation changes and constantly changing road surface have humbled some of the world’s greatest racing drivers and exposed the weaknesses of countless performance cars. If a manufacturer wants to prove its engineering credentials, this is where it comes.

Now, however, the Nürburgring has become the proving ground for something altogether different.

Xiaomi completed the full circuit entirely without a human driver behind the wheel, recording a lap time of 10 minutes and 29.483 seconds. The run was conducted under the Nürburgring’s official timing procedures, prompting the circuit to introduce a brand-new category dedicated to Autonomous Driving under its Electric Vehicles classification.

Completing an autonomous lap around a quiet proving ground is one thing. Doing it around the Nürburgring is something else entirely.

According to Xiaomi, the YU7 GT successfully navigated all 73 corners and almost 300 metres of elevation change entirely under autonomous control, continuously adapting to the circuit’s changing conditions without human intervention.

Whether you view autonomous driving with excitement or scepticism, it is difficult to ignore the engineering challenge involved.

Teaching A Car To Think

Under the extreme loads encountered during the lap, Xiaomi collected valuable information relating to vehicle dynamics, control strategies and system redundancy.

The company says these findings will be used to refine future autonomous driving algorithms and improve the overall robustness of the platform.

The future of automotive performance may no longer be defined solely by horsepower, acceleration or lap times. Increasingly, it will also be measured by the intelligence sitting quietly behind the steering wheel, even when nobody is holding it.
