AutoTalk – A Conversation With Marco Spessotto, Product Manager at Ferrari

Marco Spessotto

At the regional launch of the new Ferrari 849 Testarossa, we spoke to Marco Spessotto, who offered invaluable insights into what the future holds for the Prancing Horse.

Ferrari has long mastered the art of merging tradition with innovation, but with the unveiling of the new Ferrari 849 Testarossa, the marque takes a bold stride into the future while honouring a name that stirs deep emotional resonance among fans of the Prancing Horse.

At a regional event held in Thailand, we managed to catch up with Marco Spessotto, Product Manager at Ferrari, who shared insights into the philosophy, development, and reception of this stunning new model.

In a roundtable interview, he detailed how the 849 Testarossa brings together the heritage of the original Testarossa with a forward-looking design ethos befitting Ferrari’s modern identity.

A Name Steeped in Heritage

“The Testarossa name represents one of the most iconic chapters in Ferrari’s story,” Spessotto reflected. “Our goal was to reinterpret the spirit of the 512S through a modern lens, not merely replicate it.”

This spirit finds form in a vehicle that blends unmistakable Ferrari proportions with subtle nods to the past. The 849 Testarossa adopts shades of F80, or ghosts of Ferrari’s past. Bits of stylised racing car, volumes that speak of shape defined by cutthroat aero.

The front is double-tiered, featuring aero flicks that look like bumper overriders that shape the air backwards. From the top, it looks almost square-shaped, with twin tapers reminiscent of the 512S.

The lower area widens the car visually, and there’s a typhoon’s worth of vortex generators under the front to play with the aero profile.

Inside, the cabin embodies Ferrari’s “eyes on the road, hands on the wheel” philosophy: driver-focused, tactile, and immersive, maintaining the sculptural quality expected from Ferrari interiors.

“We also wanted to celebrate this name that started in 1955, exactly 70 years later. So, the combination of all of these things made us really sure that it was the right name for the car,” Spessotto added.

Technological Sophistication Meets Gran Turismo Grandeur

Marco Spessotto

More than just an homage to the past, the 849 Testarossa introduces a suite of innovations that set it apart in Ferrari’s GT lineup. It features an uprated 4.0-litre twin turbo V8, engineered to deliver both visceral excitement and long-distance comfort, a core tenet of the modern Ferrari experience.

According to Spessotto, “It’s not just about outright performance. This car is about how you feel when you drive it, how it connects with you, on a mountain road or on a long coastal stretch.”

Bridging Heritage and Electrification

Marco Spessotto

When asked how Ferrari manages the delicate act of bridging legacy with future technologies, particularly as the industry moves toward electrification, Spessotto offered a measured yet passionate perspective.

“Our approach is always to preserve the soul of Ferrari,” he explained. “Electrification is part of the roadmap, but every application must be purposeful, respectful of the brand’s DNA.”

A Warm Global Welcome

Initial reactions to the 849 Testarossa have been overwhelmingly positive. Marco Spessotto shared that clients across the globe, from long-standing collectors to a new generation of Ferrari enthusiasts, have responded with “emotion, nostalgia, and curiosity.”

“What has surprised us most,” he noted, “is how the design resonates across ages. The younger audience sees it as a bold statement, while others feel a strong emotional tie to the original Testarossa.”

Dealers have also praised the vehicle’s ability to spark showroom excitement, and early allocations have reportedly seen strong demand, particularly in Asia Pacific markets where appreciation for the brand’s heritage runs deep.

“We are really developing the Southeast Asia region to be closer to our clients, and it is going really well in that direction. We can see all across Southeast Asia that there is this really strong appetite for racing activities, for classic cars, and the history of Ferrari in general. We really see this interest, and for us it’s a great pleasure,” he added.

The New Chapter Begins

Marco Spessotto

With the launch of the 849 Testarossa, Ferrari signals not just a return to form but a reinvention.

By breathing new life into a revered nameplate, the brand has succeeded in crafting an icon that is every bit as modern as it is iconic.
