Jaecoo J6 RWD Review

Jaecoo J6 RWD

If I were to buy an EV today, it would be a little quirky and a little different. The Jaecoo J6 bags that mantra down to a tee.

Because if we are to embrace electrification, it ought to bring a touch of joy along with it.

Whether it is an internal combustion engine, a hybrid, or a full EV, the appeal of a car should always come down to how it makes you feel behind the wheel. And in the case of an EV, that usually means instant torque and fuss-free motoring, rather than some lofty notion of saving the planet.

Which brings me to the Jaecoo J6 RWD, a car that, quite refreshingly, does not take itself too seriously.

A Chunky Character

The Jaecoo J6 has always been a bit of a visual conversation starter. When I last drove the all-wheel-driven Cat B variant (what Jaecoo calls Intelligent Wheel Drive), it felt like a modern reinterpretation of the classic off-road archetype. Like a Suzuki Jimny, but grown up, more powerful, and significantly more comfortable.

The RWD version carries over that same visual bravado. In fact, unless you are particularly obsessive about badges, you would be hard-pressed to tell the two apart.

It retains that chiselled, square-jawed stance, with pronounced wheel arches and a silhouette that feels like a greatest hits album of off-road icons like the Jeep Wrangler, Land Rover Defender, and Mercedes-Benz G-Class, all rolled into one cohesive, modern form.

Less Muscle, More Meaning

Of course, the RWD variant takes a slightly different approach under the skin. Where the IWD model comes armed with a larger 69.77kWh battery and considerably more power, the RWD makes do with a 65.69kWh unit, producing 99kW and 220Nm.

Driver ego aside, that’s more than enough power for most folks who are looking to pick up an EV, and the battery is able to realistically cover about 300km on a single charge.

Out on the road, the J6 RWD reveals itself to be less of a bruiser and more of a cruiser. Acceleration is smooth, measured, and entirely unhurried. It is the sort of car that encourages you to take things easy, to glide through traffic rather than dart between lanes.

It’s a lovely companion to get around town with, and its short overhangs and robust camera system makes it a breeze to park.

A Rugged, Honest Companion

What I appreciate most about the J6 is its sense of purpose. There is an earnest ruggedness to it, a feeling that it is always ready for something, even if that “something” is just a weekend run to the supermarket or a spontaneous “road trip” across the island.

The cabin is more practical than luxurious, but it is thoughtfully laid out. There is sufficient comfort, enough storage, and a layout that feels intuitive rather than over-designed.

Look closer, and you will notice the recurring “i” motif, a subtle design detail that ties together the interior and exterior lighting signatures. In some markets, after all, this car is known as the iCar.

Its 450 litre boot is perfectly square and has a side-opening tailgate, while the utility box is perfect for small or loose items.

The Right Kind of Fun

The Jaecoo J6 RWD is not about outright performance. It is not about cutting-edge luxury. And it certainly is not about being the most efficient or technologically advanced EV on the market. Instead, it is about personality.

There is a playful, almost rebellious charm to the J6. It feels like a car for those who do not want to blend into the sea of anonymous, appliance-like EVs that populate our roads today.

What it offers instead is something far more valuable: a sense of individuality in an increasingly homogenised segment.
