BYD’s premium brand, Denza, has introduced a new variant of its B5 plug-in hybrid SUV, and the B5 Zenith was unveiled with a glamping-themed event held at Denza’s flagship showroom at Alexandra Road on 17 September.

The B5 Zenith adds a whole host of extra features over the regular B5, which was launched earlier this year. Externally, the Zenith now comes with 20-inch wheels shod with Pirelli tyres, as well as an enclosed cover for the externally-mounted spare tyre.

On the inside, the Zenith features Nappa leather upholstery, a digital rear view mirror as well as the availability of an Ultra-Wideband (UWB) smartphone key, allowing compatible smartphones to be used as a digital key for the car.

Probably the most significant upgrade on the Zenith is the new DiSus-P Intelligent Hydraulic Body Control System, which is an active suspension system that can automatically adjust the damping when traversing over rough surfaces, and reduce body roll while cornering.

The suspension can be raised by up to 50mm, or lowered by up to 90mm, for a total adjustment range of 140mm. Should the situation calls for it, the Zenith has a wading depth of up to 790mm, subject to the manufacturer’s specified operating conditions.

The powertrain remains the same however, with the B5 Zenith featuring the same plug-in hybrid setup that combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with two electric motors for a total output of 570bhp and 760Nm of torque, allowing it to go from 0-100km/h in 4.8 seconds.

Likewise, the 31.8kWh battery remains unchanged, and it allows the B5 Zenith to drive for up to 90km on electric power alone. It also retains the standard B5’s 16 intelligent driving modes, allowing the car to adapt to various driving conditions and terrain.

Denza is retailing the B5 Zenith at a special launch pricing of $379,888 with COE, which is about 35 grand more than the standard B5 variant. It adds though that customers can enjoy up to $18,000 worth of ownership benefits, as well as a $9,000 road tax subsidy for the first year of ownership.
