Porsche’s latest Formula E creation, the 99X Electric, has just dropped, and it’s packed with upgrades.
After clinching back-to-back championships, Porsche is back with their GEN3 Evo contender, now with front-wheel drive activation and fresh design updates. GEN3 Evo regulations mean limited energy availability, pushing the team to squeeze out every drop of efficiency.
The team has tweaked the in-house components to give Pascal Wehrlein and António Félix da Costa the competitive edge they need for another title-winning season.
For those keeping count, GEN4 cars are on the horizon for 2026/2027, and every new feature in this car is a peek at the innovations they’re brewing for future seasons.
The 99X Electric can now activate all-wheel drive during qualifying, race starts, and “Attack Mode” sequences. The new tyres, courtesy of Hankook, promise to deliver even better performance.
In Formula E’s sustainability-first style, each car still only gets two sets of tyres per weekend; three for double-header events.
On the design front, you’ll notice a fresh new front wing, shaped for durability. Porsche’s engineers have reinforced it to handle a bit more contact.
The new cladding on the rear of the car completes the sleek, rugged look of a machine ready to go head-to-head.
Speaking of looks, Porsche has given the 99X Electric a bold new colour scheme. Gone is the traditional black, white, and red; now, it’s dressed in Purple Sky Metallic and Shade Green Metallic.
Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President of Porsche Motorsport, spoke about the significance of the 99X Electric in the Formula E field. “We’re here to build the future of sports cars, and Formula E is the perfect platform to showcase our electric capabilities,” he said. “With Pascal taking the World Championship last season, we’ve set a high standard, and this season, we’re ready to push it further.”
Florian Modlinger, Director of Factory Motorsport for Formula E, highlighted the engineering challenges of introducing all-wheel drive. “The hardware was in place for GEN3, but bringing it to life required substantial software tuning,” he explained. “Balancing maximum acceleration with energy efficiency has been key, and it’s a task that benefits not just our racecars but our road cars as well.”
Pascal Wehrlein, the reigning champ, will sport a helmet to match the car’s fresh colours. “The 99X Electric looks fantastic,” he said. “I’m proud to have that number 1 on my car, and I can’t wait to defend my title.” His teammate, António Félix da Costa, echoed the excitement.
“The all-wheel drive, new tyres, and upgraded components bring an added layer of thrill. I think fans will love the new look just as much as we do.”
And for fans who want to see the 99X Electric in action, the season kicks off soon, with São Paulo marking the first stop.
