Selected from more than 23,000 applicants worldwide, the finalists will embark on a 3,000km expedition across three African countries, combining off-road challenges with conservation efforts.
The British adventure brand has revealed the 36 finalists for its inaugural Defender Trophy competition, bringing together an extraordinary group of individuals for a demanding expedition across Africa later this year.
Selected from more than 23,000 applicants through ten regional qualifying events, the finalists represent a remarkably diverse collection of professions, including astronauts, filmmakers, firefighters and teachers.

The Defender Trophy marks the brand’s return to global adventure competitions, drawing inspiration from the legendary Trophy and Challenge events that helped establish its reputation for off-road capability.
It has been 45 years since the original concept was introduced, and this latest interpretation promises to be considerably more than an exercise in driving through difficult terrain.
The Global Final will cover approximately 3,000km across three African countries, testing participants through a series of demanding challenges designed to assess their endurance, teamwork and off-road driving abilities.
Naturally, the Defender Trophy Edition will play a central role throughout the expedition. Built around the marque’s longstanding reputation for tackling unforgiving environments, the vehicle will be subjected to conditions far removed from the comfort of conventional roads.

What distinguishes the Defender Trophy from conventional off-road competitions is its emphasis on conservation. Working alongside long-standing conservation partner Tusk, the finalists will participate in five purpose-led projects during the expedition.
These initiatives will involve hands-on contributions intended to support conservation efforts and leave a lasting positive impact on the communities and environments involved.
For Defender, the objective is to demonstrate that adventure can extend beyond personal achievement. “This is a new era for Defender, creating a new epic adventure inspired by the legacy of Trophy events of the past,” said Paddy McGillycuddy, Global Managing Director of Defender.
“Our finalists are courageous and ambitious, with a desire to give back and make a difference. These are not pure athletes; they are from all walks of life and have an insatiable thirst for adventure.”

The 36 finalists hail from across the globe, representing regions including Asia Pacific, Australia, China, Europe, Japan, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas.
Among those selected are Lily Hillary from the Asia Pacific region, Australians Glen Wimberley and Louise McNair, and Japan’s Naoki Imamura.
North America’s representatives include Sarah Gillis, Nathaniel Biggs and three other finalists, while competitors from South Africa, Taiwan and South America will also join the expedition.
Their varied backgrounds reinforce the competition’s central philosophy: extraordinary adventures need not be reserved for professional athletes or experienced explorers.

The Defender Trophy represents a renewed commitment to the spirit of exploration that has defined the marque for generations. From its origins in 1948 to today’s technologically sophisticated Defender models, the brand has built its identity around vehicles designed to venture beyond the beaten track.
By combining demanding off-road challenges with meaningful conservation initiatives, Defender is encouraging participants to measure success through more than distance travelled or obstacles conquered.
