19 Polestar 2 cars will join the ranks of the Singapore Traffic Police and patrol the roads of Singapore come 2024.
Imagine the hum of the expressway without the roar of engines, as a fleet of 19 swift and exhaust-free Polestar 2 saloons don the cape of Singapore’s Traffic Police from 2024. You’ll start to see them on the roads soon (hopefully not giving chase to you), as Polestar won the tender to operate their cars as police interceptors.Â
There were many contenders vying for the spot – Hyundai Ioniq 5, BYD Seal, and the BMW i4 and iX1. Yet, it was Wearnes Automotive, the local emissary of Polestar, whose bid won out. And why Polestar, you ask? Maybe it’s the silent hum of Swedish innovation or the promise of a patrol that glides like a phantom through the night.
The Polestar 2 as we all know is no ordinary electric chariot. It will also be the dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant, a sprinter that kisses 100km/h in 4.5 seconds, leaving the wind gasping for breath at a top speed of 205km/h. With an 82kWh battery under its sleek hood, it boasts a range of 470km.
And the bid, my friends, included a 10-year maintenance program, a pact to keep these silent guardians running smoothly.Â
BMW, Subaru, and Volvo, stalwarts of the patrol drama, will pass the torch to Polestar. The first of these silent guardians will roll into action in 2024, their sleek frames replacing the echoes of the past with the hum of a cleaner future.
Interestingly, the tender has an option for three more Polestars, swelling the potential electric fleet to 22. Before they hit the road, these silent guardians will be adorned with police regalia, a makeover worth a sizeable chunk of the tender value.
Why this shift to electric cars? It’s part of Singapore’s dance towards cleaner energy, a tango initiated to reduce emissions. The vision is clear – by 2030, pure combustion engines will bow out of the registration game, making way for a cleaner, quieter fleet.
As the British police added the Polestar 2 to their fleet, let’s revel in the fact that ours will be the latest facelifted version.
